Alaskan Green Energy Solutions - Society - EzineMark

There?s been a lot of debate in recent years about the prospect of drilling for oil in Alaska as a way to supplement the United States? need for traditional energy materials. What seems to have been overlooked, however, are the numerous Alaska alternative energy solutions that we could take advantage of instead! It?s true; Alaska yields some of the greatest opportunities for renewable energy in North America, opportunities that we as a country can take advantage of to live more sustainably!

We?ve all heard of solar power and wind energy as sources of renewable energy, but did you know that Alaska utilizes a different type of green energy source? Biomass is simply the use of living organisms to create fuel, much like plant matter being broken down for its chemical reactions. Alaska alternative energy solutions dealing in biomass mainly come from wood and sawmill waste, fish byproducts and municipal waste that is produced in the region.

But biomass is only one of the Alaska alternative energy solutions that?s being explored today.

Because the state is surrounded on three sides by water and some of the strongest harbor currents around, Alaska is also taking advantage of tidal energy as a way to generate electricity for homes located nearest to harbors or inlets.

Tidal energy is much like biomass in that it is a completely natural source of energy. The strong currents of Alaska?s harbors repeatedly transfer their kinetic energy to buoys that absorb it and convert it to a useable energy source. This energy is then channeled to the mainland where residents like you can use it.

By exploring Alaska alternative energy solutions like tidal energy or biomass, we as a nation open up more possibilities to our energy future.

By utilizing these clean energy sources as opposed to drilling for oil and ruining the environment, we guarantee a cleaner, safer solution to a much-anticipated problem. What?s more, by adopting these alternative energy sources today we?re better preparing ourselves for the day when traditional energy is no longer a viable option for the nation to use.

Clean Green Nation is helping to further Alaska alternative energy solutions by providing area residents with green energy products and solutions. If you?re in an area where tidal energy or biomass is not an option, consider solar panels or personal wind turbines as equally effective alternatives!

Chinese Food, done right ? The Good Stuff 411

?

?

Picture from Jen's Blog

So?those of you who?follow know I don?t cook a lot of meat these days, but I am married to a great guy who as much as he loves and supports me, has no intention of giving up meat.? When I saw this recipe I knew he would love it?kids loved it too!?

This comes from Jen in the Heartland and it is TO DIE FOR!? What I really REALLY love about this recipe is it tasted just like a dish one might get at a Chinese restaurant, yet having made it I knew it was much healthier, very low in fat, and even easy on the sodium since I swapped the soy sauce out!? I served it with brown rice and some awesome green beans (see below).

Crockpot Mongolian Beef

?

I made mine with smaller pieces of meat b/c of the kiddos.? I also used less red pepper on the beans.

The Sauce

  • 1 1/2 lb. ball tip steak or flank steak (here you have the control. Where you buy the meat, how the meat has been raised, and how lean you want it)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (I used Trader Joe?s frozen garlic cubes)
  • 4 sliced green onions
  • 1 t. dried onion
  • 1/2 c. soy sauce (used Bragg?Liquid Aminos)
  • 1/4 c. white wine
  • 1/4 c. cooking sherry
  • 1/2 T. white wine vinegar
  • 1 t. sesame oil
  • 1 t. molasses (used agave nectar.? Could also use honey.? If you want it to be black in color, like Jen?s is, then use molasses)
  • 1 t. ginger(I buy ginger in the squeeze tube at Safeway)
  • 1/4 t. black pepper
  • 1 t. red chili flakes
  • 1/2 T. peanut butter
  • 3 T. brown sugar
  • 1/4 c. cornstarch

?

?

Add meat and cook

?

1) Slice meat thin, put in?ziplock with cornstarch.
2) Put all liquid and dry spices into crockpot, add PB, mix well.
3) Add garlic and 3 green onions. ?Put meat on top, toss gingerly.
4) Cover and cook on low 4-6 hours (mine took around 3 1/2).

My friend Dee pinned this awesome recipe from Kalyn?s Kitchen?the same day I found the Crockpot Mongolian Beef, and of course I knew right away the Universe had told me just what to serve for dinner!

DELISH!

Spicy Sichuan Style Green Beans

kalyn's kitchen

(Makes 4 servings; recipe adapted from Easy Party Food, a special-interest publication of Sunset Magazine.)

  • Ingredients:
1 lb. fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into halves or thirds (Costco frozen, I always have green beans in the freezer because my favorite green bean recipe is soooo?easy and loved by all -yes, kids too) I dropped them in boiling water for 2 minutes, then saut?ed with ingredients below.
  • 2 T soy sauce (I used low-sodium)
  • 1 T rice vinegar (not seasoned)
  • 2 tsp. Splenda, Sugar, or granular Stevia in the Raw (I used a little brown sugar)
  • 1/4 ? 1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes (I used 1/4 tsp. and the beans were fairly hot)
  • 1/4 tsp. white pepper (or use black pepper if you don?t have white pepper)
  • 1 T vegetable oil (I used olive oil)
  • 2 T minced garlic
  • 1 T peeled and minced ginger root (squeeze tube again)

What's Up with Porn? | Sex and Intimacy

By Robert Weiss LCSW, CSAT-S

For as long as men have viewed pornography, women have asked, ?Why?? Now they may be asking, ?Why not??

While some women express concern about male pornography use, others are simply curious. Meanwhile, increasing numbers of women themselves are viewing pornography both with a partner and without.

Some women in committed relationships fear that a partner?s porn use may be indicative of relationship dissatisfaction or a desire to stray. But in reality, a man?s use of pornography most often has less to do with his partner directly (though it may affect them), and more to do with his own innate characteristics and desires. And today, increasing numbers of women are finding their own reasons to purchase, view and explore their own sexual fantasies through pornography.

Here are five things you may or may not know about sex and porn:

#1 Men are more visually stimulated than women.

A 2004 Center for Behavioral Neuroscience study confirmed a long-held belief that men are more stimulated by visual cues than women. Our amygdala, the area of the human brain that controls emotion and motivation, is more highly activated in men when viewing sexual images than women viewing the same content. Men are overall more attuned to visual imagery than women.

This neurobiological difference between men and women has an evolutionary basis. Researchers speculate that human evolution offered men who could more readily identify sexually receptive females through visual cues a better chance of having sex and passing on their genetic code.

Women, on the other hand, are emotionally hard-wired toward selective partner choice. This essential trait likely evolved to ensure that the chosen male sexual partner would remain engaged beyond the sexual act to help mother and child through the challenges of pregnancy, birth and child-rearing. Research tells us that unlike image-driven males, women appear more natively attracted to the complex characteristics of physical strength, health, social status, emotional stability and loyalty.

#2 Unattached men prefer sex to love.

Perhaps driven by similar biological mechanisms, men appear to have an innate capacity to partake in casual sexual experiences involving little or no emotional attachment, whereas healthy adult women are much more likely to seek and enjoy sex within the context of an intimate or emotional connection.

To this point, a 2010 James Madison University study found that young men prefer casual sexual hook-ups and dating to relationships, while most of their female peers preferred some kind of ongoing relationship over casual sex. Unsurprisingly, young men seem to favor independence over commitment, fearing that a woman will require some form of relationship commitment as a prerequisite to casual sex.

Women, on the other hand, expressed concern that an intense sexual relationship would lead to unintended emotional attachments to an unavailable or unwilling relationship partner.

A 2008 study from Durham University reached similar conclusions. Most men in the study experienced higher self-confidence and a sense of well-being after a one-night stand, whereas nearly half the women reported having negative feelings afterward.

#3 Men like sex!

While certainly not the case for all men or all women, studies suggest that men tend to have a stronger sexual drive. In general, men tend to think about sex, masturbate and orgasm more often than women.

A Florida State University research study indicated that approximately 66% of adult men said they masturbated regularly, compared to 40% of women. In terms of relationship sexuality, 75% of men in a primary relationship reported that they always have an orgasm when having partner sex, compared to only 26% of the women.

#4 Pornography was designed for men ? but things are changing!

As the porn industry itself evolved through the creation and distribution of explicit visual images with little focus on emotions or storyline, it makes sense that few women were previously aroused or interested in ?traditional? porn. Many women found ?traditional porn? to be more offensive than stimulating.

Until very recently, most pornography has been aimed toward a primarily male audience, and men continue to be the largest consumers of online, print and video porn. However, in the past few years, women too have increasingly been using porn to explore their sexuality and the porn industry is responding by selectively marketing the types of story lines, foreplay and intimacy that are more likely to stimulate women.

The difference in past rates of pornography use between men and women may also be related to the fact that the types of content women find sexually arousing tends to be more complex and varied than the type that stimulates men.

Northwestern University researchers recently reported that while exclusively straight men are aroused by watching women have sex with men and/or other women, and exclusively gay men are turned on solely viewing male-on-male sex, women?s bodies most often reacted equally to male-female and male-male and female-female sex. This result most likely evolves from the fact that women?s sexual desire is more often about context and emotional bonding (think ?chick flick? or romance novel) than strict visual stimulation or even orgasm as a focused goal.

#5 Porn with purpose.

A recent Florida State University survey found that men tend to have more frequent and varied sexual fantasies than women. Viewing a wide range of porn images and experiences likely allows some men to passively experience sexual acts that they could not or would not choose to act out in real time.

Other men prefer viewing porn to sharing their most intimate fantasies and desires with a partner fearing shame, judgment or outright rejection. Still others concerned about issues related to ?size? or ?performance? seek out porn as an emotionally ?safe? option to being in relationship. The Internet, with its endless variety of sexual content and imagery has become the perfect place to safely play out sexual fantasy with or without a willing partner.

The Dark Side of Porn: Escalation and Addiction

Most stable men (and women) enjoy pornography without unduly sacrificing relationship intimacy or becoming addicted to the reliable emotional intensity it offers. However, an estimated 3% to 5% of men (there is no reliable research as yet on women) end up losing time and deferring important life priorities to abusing the porn experience, becoming dependent or addicted to the emotional distraction and escape offered via sexual intensity and compulsive masturbation. Sadly, others can escalate from simple porn use to lives filled with lies, online or live affairs and/or the viewing of bizarre or illegal imagery. This is the face of sexual addiction.

XXX and Beyond

Pornography in America is today viewed as both devil and goddess, mostly depending on the experience and beliefs of the individual watching, but the reality of its use lies mostly in the middle. In truth, sexual desire is deeply personal and somewhat different for each individual no matter his or her sex. Some women like porn at least as much as the average man, while some men would rather watch a good ball game. Clearly the Internet-dominated past two decades have wrought a sea change in the average person?s access to intensely stimulating sexual content and experience. This reality cannot be undone nor should it go unexamined.

Our culture?s escalating access to explicit pornography has already and irrevocably changed how many view relationships, fidelity, intimacy and even sex itself. For some, porn offers an emotionally expansive, playful and educational experience, while for others it is merely a convenient, if two-dimensional, means to an end. And for a sad few, porn can become an addictive beast fraught with obsession and secrecy. Much like alcohol, manufactured drugs, refined sugar and other distilled pleasurable human experiences, our current involvement and experience with porn merely reflects the sum of who we are as individuals and as a culture.

Recreational Activities for the Family

It is always good to spend some quality time with your family. This provides new experience for the family members as well as gives you time to bond. At least spending an hour doing physical and leisurely activities reduces the stress you get from work. Recreational activities also give your children time to enjoy and unwind from their school work.

There are a lot of ways to spend your time with your family. Cooking and baking are enjoyable and educational activities that can be done at home. Apart from being an opportunity to be closer to your kids, this also gives you a chance to teach them about responsibility. Learning how to cook is one of the activities that can also teach discipline and creativity.

Another stress relieving past time is making craft projects. This activity brings out the creativity and resourcefulness of each family member.

You can use recycled materials such as soup cans, bottle caps and old keys when making craft projects. This shows your children the importance of recycling and reusing. You can decorate your home with your outputs or you can sell them for a little income.

An exciting way to unwind is doing outdoor recreational activities. Sports such as baseball, skate boarding and basketball are physical activities that helps improve stamina and provides enjoyment to the family. Look for glendale parks and recreation areas when you plan to take your family for an adventure.

You can also plan a backyard camping. Pack up your camping gears, set up tents, enjoy the view of the stars and play games with your family.

All you need are sleeping bags, food, pillows, bug sprays and a space in your own backyard. You don?t need to go to glendale parks and recreation just to enjoy nature.

If you have more time in your hands, pack your things, put on sun block and take your family to go hiking at glendale parks and recreation areas. This gives the family a chance to breathe fresh air and enjoy scenery found only in nature. With all the hustle and bustle in the city, enjoying the natural outdoors is a good get away.

This is the last day of the Mardi Gras celebration ending at midnight, after a day long celebration of parades, marching groups and people in costumes. (AP Photo/Bill Haber)

(AP) ? Bathed in spring-like warmth and showered with trinkets, beads and music, New Orleans reveled in the excesses of Fat Tuesday. A seemingly endless stream of costumed marching groups and ornately-decorated float parades led by make-believe royalty poured out of the Garden District, while the French Quarter filled up with thrill seekers expecting to see debauchery.

And they did.

Some in the Quarter had a sleepless night after Monday's Lundi Gras prequel party. The drinking was in full swing again shortly after dawn, and with it came outrageous costumes and flesh-flashing that would continue until police make their annual attempt to break up the merrymaking at midnight, when Lent begins.

Tom White, 46, clad in a pink tutu, bicycled with his wife, Allison, to the French Quarter. "I'm the pink fairy this year," he said. "Costuming is the real fun of Mardi Gras. I'm not too creative but when you weigh 200 pounds and put on a tutu people still take your picture."

His wife was not in costume. "He's disgraced the family enough," she said.

Brittany Davies struggled with her friends through the morning, feeling the effects of heavy drinking from the night before.

"They're torturing me," the Denver woman joked. "But I'll be OK after a bloody mary."

Indeed, the theme of the day was party hard and often.

Wearing a bright orange wig, a purple mask and green shoes, New Orleans resident Charlotte Hamrick walked along Canal Street to meet friends.

"I'll be in the French Quarter all day," Hamrick said. "I don't even go to the parades. I love to take pictures of all the costumes and just be with my friends. It's so fun."

Police reported no major incidents along the parade route.

Across the globe, people dressed up in elaborate costumes and partied the day away. In Rio de Janeiro, an estimated 850,000 tourists joined the city's massive five-day blowout. Meanwhile, the Portuguese, who have suffered deeply in Europe's debt crisis, defied a government appeal to keep working.

In New Orleans, the streets filled with hundreds of thousands of people.

The predominantly African-American Zulu krewe was the first major parade to hit the streets, shortly after 8 a.m. Most krewe members were in the traditional black-face makeup and the Afro wigs Zulu riders have sported for decades. They handed out the organization's coveted decorated coconuts and other sought-after trinkets.

In the oak-lined Garden District, clarinetist Pete Fountain led his Half-Fast Walking Club on its annual march to the French Quarter.

Fountain, 82, gave a thumbs-up to start off and his band launched into "When The Saints Go Marching In" as they rounded the corner onto St. Charles Avenue shortly after 7 a.m. It was the 52nd time that Fountain's group has paraded for Mardi Gras. This year, the group wore bright yellow suits and matching pork pie hats for its theme, "Follow the Yellow Brick Road."

Costumes were the order of the day, ranging from the predictable to the bizarre.

Wearing a purple wig, New Orleans resident Juli Shipley carried a gallon of booze down Bourbon Street and filled her friends' cups when they got low. "We're going to wander all day and people-watch," Shipley said. "That's the best part of Mardi Gras ? the costumes. They're amazing."

Partygoers were dressed as Wizard of Oz characters Dorothy and the Wicked Witch, bags of popcorn, pirates, super heroes, clowns, jesters, princesses and lots of homemade costumes with the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold.

At New Orleans' antebellum former city hall, Mayor Mitch Landrieu toasted Zulu's monarchs and special guests. Among them was New Orleans native and former U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young who was on a float with National Urban League President Marc Morial, a former mayor of New Orleans, his wife, Michelle, and their two children.

"It's good to be home," Young said. And saluting the good weather of the day, he added, "God always smiles on New Orleans when it needs it."

After Zulu, the parade of Rex, king of Carnival, made its trek down St. Charles Avenue and to the city's business district. Along the way, parade-goers pleaded for beads and colorful aluminum coins, known as doubloons.

Small groups of families and friends had parades of their own. The Skeleton Krewe, 25 people dressed in black skeleton outfits, wandered along the parade route, heading toward St. Louis Cathedral.

Along the parade route that follows the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, die-hards had staked out prime parade-watching spots as early as Monday. Some had a Carnival-esque tailgate party under way early.

Stephanie Chapman and her family claimed their usual spot about 4 a.m. Tuesday and would be staying for the duration.

"This is a beautiful day and we'll be here until it's over. It won't rain on my parade, but if it does I won't pay any attention," she said.

Rain stayed away and temperatures were in the 70s. As the day wore on and drinking intensified, the combination encouraged raunchy acts in the French Quarter, where women bared flesh in pleadings for beads tossed to the street by revelers on balconies.

By midafternoon, some folks were tuckered out.

Alison Scott, 35, of New Orleans, was part of a group that had a small city of tents and canopies set up at Lee Circle. She and her family had been coming to the spot for about 40 years. "Believe me, I'm always glad to get here and then I'm always glad to go home," she said.

Her 6-year-old daughter, Shannon, was asleep nearby under a blanket of beads.

"She just pooped out. This is the first time she's stopped. She's been so excited all day," Scott said.

In the Cajun country of southwest Louisiana, masked riders went from town to town, making merry along the way in the Courir du Mardi Gras. And parades were scheduled elsewhere around Louisiana and on the Gulf coasts of Mississippi and Alabama.

The celebration arrived in Louisiana in 1682 when the explorer LaSalle and his party stopped at a place they called Bayou Mardi Gras south of New Orleans to celebrate.

Parading and street revelry would give way to Mardi Gras' elegant side, with the lavish and private grand balls of the Rex and Comus krewes on Tuesday night signaling the traditional end of the celebration.

Mardi Gras gives way to the beginning of Lent, the period of fasting and repentance before Easter Sunday.

The Daily got a lot of folks hopes up earlier today with a rumor that Office would soon be making an appearance on the iPad, but Microsoft is now throwing a bit of cold water on that news. While it's not exactly an outright denial that such an app is coming, a Microsoft spokesperson has now told The New York Times' Bits website that "The Daily story is based on inaccurate rumors and speculation," adding only that it has "no further comment" at this time. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, however, is further reporting that Microsoft is specifically saying that the screenshot accompanying The Daily's story is not a real picture of a Microsoft product.

Retirement Savings in Drawdown? Keep in mind Equity Publish ...

Numerous are combating this prolonged recession. Listening to the news, it doesn?t necessarily expect to be getting any better in some unspecified time in the future. Meanwhile, those that recently retired thinking they had a big enough nest egg or pension to compliment them, have watched the markets slash the value of their total investments and pensions, while aprs keep savings accounts providing insufficient value in any respect. Many individuals just need a dollop of extra help financially, for their own reasons or others with their family. These products should seriously consider home equity release schemes.

What is equity release?
Principle definition of equity release is actually locating a way for you to getting money out of an investment. For most people, the most important investment they have would be the home, so most plans are mortgages on property assets called lifetime mortgages. Those are under no circumstances standard mortgage, like the ones having just been paid off big time once retirement has been reached. Rather they are a specialist lifetime mortgage that has specific features of the individuals over 55 yrs of age that they really are limited to.

The rest of your life mortgage is principally duplicate re-mortgaging your residence. However, the financial adviser who works to set up the equity release plan features a volume of potential options to offer any prospective applicant. People like having their equity release loan paid to them in an, one-off cash ? just like a traditional mortgage. Others might require the tax free cash to be paid in stages, in lieu of all at once. A less common request is designed for the bucks to become paid as a thoughtful regular income.

What can the tax-free cash be accustomed for?
This arrangement is great for somebody trying to enhance their retirement lifestyle by way of renovating their own home, build an extension or build a gift for their children. By re-investing funds taken out of your respective property are going to have longer term positive effect on the end value of your property after it is all mixed up sold. This will be of curiosity on your children & their inheritance.

Therefore, people viewing a release of equity should not consider lifetime mortgages to be a poor choice, as although these are taking cash-out, these are upgrading the home & hopefully adding or helping to retain its value.

Which are the choices?
You will find further methods available in a potential applicant when considering equity release schemes. They can now agree to pay the interest on a monthly basis, therefore keeping the size of the equity release loan fixed. This instance is really a fixed interest only lifetime mortgage, as well as a good way of keeping the magnitude of debt under control.

These plans are actually given much consideration as additionally there is the flexibility to choose how much of the interest you want to pay. Therefore, you could work throughout your own budget.

Another option for all those wanting to make extra savings or pensions would be the skill to release the equity release funds slowly; using the tax free cash being withdrawn in smaller increments being a wage would. Because of this a further quantity of funds can be made usable with a monthly basis, making it not difficult to supplement pensions or savings and never must go back to work or sell a home or office entirely.

If ever you choose flexibility of when & simply how much you withdraw the summoning a drawdown equity release plan may well be considered. After taking an initial tranche of capital coming from a facility presented by the obligation provider, next you can draw ad-hoc payments from thus reserve whenever required. Therefore, any time a new car, boiler or holiday requires payment the funds are accessible inside of a 1-2 week window.

In each of of them examples, the value of our home equity release loan might be repaid in the event the residence is sold; either if downsizing, or if the policy holders move into care. Alternatively, while the inheritance estate is dispersed, the equity release loan would be section of the liability at the value of your house.

How is ta lime mortgage repaid?
As soon as the residence is sold, then the equity release plan is repaid. Alternatively, in case a participant in the family wishes to retain ownership of our property, maybe for letting or investment purposes, these will pay back the equity release loan ? possibly via residential or buy-to-let mortgage arrangement.

However, what is vital may be that there are alternatives for all those struggling financially throughout their retirement, when staying on a significant family home. Often people assume that financing the domain could be shifting a debt to a higher generation, rather it is linked to a house asset ? thus passes on your option of keeping the family home, or selling it in the future. Hopefully, once property values do begin to rise it could have better market values than through the current recession.

www.equityrelease.net In summary, the alternatives that lifetime mortgages present can be very soothing the persons who require additional money. They are often helpful inside their timeliness, they come in and can be completed inside of a relatively short period of time (compared with that of selling a home). They include features which you ll find are more likely to be agreeable and attractive to your over 55?s who are looking for this support as well www.equityrelease.net.

Learn From Jack Donaghy: Buy a Domain Before It Goes Porn [Video]

Choosing a domain name can often lead to drastic compromises in name recognition. Only the lucky few who acted quickly, or who have truly unique names, can claim lordship over theirname.com. I pity the John Smiths of the world. Nobody feels the hurt more than Jack Donaghy when, on last night's 30 Rock, he tries to register a domain for his campaign for mayor. More »

Be wholesome enough to compete, but in a wholesome competitors that is.

Dart Pin 2: Other People?s Conduct

In life, its hard to stay powerful specifically when issues and other people round you retain pulling you down. Once we get to the battle field, we must always choose the proper baggage to deliver and armors to use, and decide those which are bullet proof. Life?s choices give us arrays of extra options. Self-worth brings about self enchancment, true evaluation, and determination. So how do you start placing up the building blocks of self-worth? Be positive. Be contented and happy. Be appreciative. By no means miss a possibility to compliment. A optimistic way of life will allow you to build self-worth, your starter guide to self improvement.

Common flame retardant linked to social, behavioral and learning deficits

ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? Mice genetically engineered to be susceptible to autism-like behaviors that were exposed to a common flame retardant were less fertile and their offspring were smaller, less sociable and demonstrated marked deficits in learning and long-term memory when compared with the offspring of normal unexposed mice, a study by researchers at UC Davis has found. The researchers said the study is the first to link genetics and epigenetics with exposure to a flame retardant chemical.

The research was published online February 16 in the journal Human Molecular Genetics. It will be presented during a symposium on Feb. 18, at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) by Janine LaSalle, a professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology in the UC Davis School of Medicine and the UC Davis Genome Center.

"This study highlights the interaction between epigenetics and the effects of early exposure to flame retardants," said Janine LaSalle, the study's senior author and a researcher affiliated with the UC Davis MIND Institute. "Our experiments with wild-type and mutant mice indicate that exposure to flame retardants presents an independent risk of neurodevelopmental deficits associated with reduced sociability and learning."

Epigenetics describes the heritable changes in gene expression caused by mechanisms other than those in the DNA sequence. One such mechanism is DNA methylation, in which genes are silenced when their activation no longer is required. DNA methylation is essential for normal development. The researchers chose a mouse that was genetically and epigenetically susceptible to social behavioral deficits in order to understand the potential effect of this environmental pollutant on genetically susceptible humans.

LaSalle and her colleagues examined the effects of the chemical BDE-47 (Tetrabromodiphenl ether), a member of the class of flame retardants called polybrominated diphenylethers, or PBDEs. PBDEs have been used in a wide range of products, including electronics, bedding, carpeting and furniture. They have been shown to persist in the environment and accumulate in living organisms, and toxicological testing has found that they may cause liver toxicity, thyroid toxicity and neurodevelopmental toxicity, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. BDE-47 is the PBDE found at highest concentrations in human blood and breast milk, raising concerns about its potential neurotoxic effects during pregnancy and neonatal development.

The research was conducted in the offspring of mice genetically engineered for the autism phenotype found in Rett syndrome, a disorder that occurs primarily in females and causes regression in expressive language, motor skills and social reciprocity in late infancy. The condition affects about 1 in 10,000 children.

Autism spectrum disorders are a group of neurodevelopmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral deficits. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that an average of 1 in 110 children born in the United States today will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

Rett syndrome is causally linked to defects in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 gene MECP2 situated on the X chromosome. Mutations in MECP2 result in a nonfunctional MeCP2 protein, which is required for normal brain development. The researchers evaluated the effects of exposure to BDE-47 on mice genetically engineered to have mutations in MECP2 and their offspring, or pups. The genetically engineered Mecp2 mother mice, or dams, were bred with non-mutant wild-type males. The dams were monitored for 10 weeks -- for four weeks prior to conception, three weeks during gestation and three weeks of lactation. They were then compared with a control group of normal, unexposed dams and pups over several generations and hundreds of mice.

The study found that that the weights of the pups of the lactating BDE-47-exposed dams were diminished when compared with the controls, as were their survival rates. To assess the effects of the flame retardant exposure on the pups and their genotypes, the researchers placed them through more than 10 cognitive, social and physical tests.

Female offspring of dams exposed with BDE-47 spent half as much time interacting with another mouse in a 10-minute sociability test compared to controls. The reduced sociability in BDE-47 exposed females corresponded to reduced DNA methylation in females regardless of genotype. In addition, genetic and environmental interaction effects in this study were specifically observed in females.

In a short-term memory test of social novelty, although all mice showed the expected preference for interacting with a novel over a familiar mouse, BDE-47-exposed mutant female mice spent about half as much time interacting with the familiar mouse than their non-mutant littermates. In a long-term memory test of swimming to reach a hidden platform in a cloudy pool, female mice who were both mutant and BDE-47 exposed did not learn to reach the platform faster after fourdays of training. These behavioral changes in social and cognitive learning specifically in the interaction group corresponded to changes in a known epigenetic regulator of DNA methylation in brain, DNA methyltransferase 3a (Dnmt3a).

LaSalle said that the study results are important because better understanding of the epigenetic pathways implicated in social behavior and cognition may lead to improved treatments for autism spectrum disorders.

"While the obvious preventative step is to limit the use and accumulation of PBDEs in our environment, this would likely be a long-term solution," LaSalle said. "These pollutants are going to be hard to get rid of tomorrow. However, one important preventative that all women could do tomorrow is to start taking prenatal vitamins before becoming pregnant, as these may counteract the toxins in our environment through DNA methylation," she said.

A study by researchers at UC Davis conducted in 2011 found that women who reported not taking a daily prenatal vitamin immediately before and during the first month of pregnancy were nearly twice as likely to have a child with an autism spectrum disorder as women who did take the supplements -- and the associated risk rose to seven times as great when combined with a high-risk genetic make-up.

The research was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences/Environmental Protection Agency Center for Children's Environmental Health, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program.

Video: Contraception hearing gets heated

>>> what happened today in washington. it was not a big volatile issue in politics a month ago, but the way it is tonight, suddenly contraception, reproductive rights , birth control has roared its way forward into a national issue. as both parties have found a way to put it there. today, a congressional hearing about contraception got heated. law makers got angry because of what was missing. our report from capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell.

>> reporter: it started on capitol hill .

>> where are the women? when i look at this panel, i don't see one single woman.

>> reporter: this picture set off that anger when only men had a seat at the witness table during a hearing related to contraception.

>> we've been denied the right to have a witness-

>> reporter: politically the left defines this battle as women's right and equality issue.

>> i may at some point be moved to explain biology to my colleagues.

>> reporter: on the right they focus on religious freedom . today's gop-led hearing was prompted by that recent fight with the white house over whether religious-based employers must provide insurance coverage for birth control .

>> no man or women should ever be forced to betray that faith.

>> reporter: the republican chairman invited only faith leaders, not advocates for women's health.

>> imagine having a panel on women's health and they don't have any women on the panel.

>> reporter: on the campaign trail, a major donor for rick santorum , wealthy businessman made a comment today that caught fire. andrea mitchell reports free started off saying the focus should be on economy, not contraception.

>> back in my days, they used bayer aspirin for contraception. the gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly.

>> reporter: the social issue divide can cut across gender and generational lines.

>> if the issue continues, it's likely to help the republican party because it could be a way of wooing catholics in the swing states such as pennsylvania and ohio.

>> reporter: while the economy looms largest, pollsters say these deeply personal issues can make an impact. kelly o'donnell, nbc news, washington.

For many of these individuals, the 1031 exchange money could not be any easier. However, the times have changed. The downturn has taught even the most bullish real estate speculators that real estate can also go down in value. More than ever it takes professional know-how, time, and resources to successfully invest in real estate. So, how does the average person invest in real estate, this day and age?

Well, there is a way, and it?s been around for quite some time. It?s called a Real Estate Investment Trust, or REIT. A Real Estate Investment Trust is a way for the small investor to invest in big real estate. A Real Estate Investment Trust is an organization that is set up to manage and invest in real estate professionally.

You can purchase a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) via the stock exchange in the form of a stock, or privately. Private Real Estate Investment Trusts typically require that certain suitability criteria be met. Also, private REITs are typically longer-term investments, with liquidity considerations.

Public Real Estate Investment Trusts can be bought and sold on the stock exchange and are considerably more liquid than their private counterparts.?Investing in a Real Estate Investment Trust can come in many forms. You can purchase a Real Estate Investment Trust that focuses on large-scale commercial real estate, for example.

This would allow you to take part in major real estate deals involving 100 plus story buildings, that would otherwise be available to the ultra rich. Some Real Estate Investment Trusts may have their focus in apartment buildings or even new housing construction. The point here is that you can choose your Real Estate Investment Trust sector through one of these REITs.

If you want a more professionally managed approach there are a large number of REITs actively managed through the purchase of mutual funds. This can provide for diversification, and individual real estate sectors.?Properly set up Real Estate Investment Trusts are tax-advantaged.

This means that they are not taxed at the corporate level. However, they must be set up properly. It is required that REITs invest 75% of their funds in real estate.

These requirements are met by income derived from mortgage or rent interest. Essentially, you?re relying on other parties for their expertise in the real estate arena. Going at it alone is tougher than ever these days.

You have the typical headaches, like qualifying for a 1031 exchange, property taxes, escrow, title insurance, and so on. But, that?s really the easy part. When the real estate market only went up, the biggest worry for speculators was how to take advantage of a 1031 exchange and save on capital gains.

Now, there?s much more to worry about, as real estate not only goes up, but it can certainly come down.?It?s important to keep in mind that Real Estate Investment Trusts also come with inherent risks. If real estate values plummet, and you have a large percentage of your assets exposed to Real Estate Investment Trusts you may experience declines, as well.

This is where diversification is very important. The standard Real Estate Investment Trust diversify you within different types of real estate, but you should always practice further diversification. Investing in different asset classes, sectors, and the life will provide you with further diversification. Make sure to work with a qualified investment advisor or do your due diligence when investing in any type of Real Estate Investment Trust.
