'Hunger Games' Crosses $600 Million Globally

The Avengers faces a tough battle if they want to top Katniss and company's expected $400 million domestic earnings.

After its sixth weekend in theaters, The Hunger Games" is still lighting up the box office. Katniss and company's cumulative gross is currently a whopping $601 million worldwide, after raking in $11.2 million in the U.S. and another $7.4 million overseas this weekend.

Standing tall at #4, the dystopian franchise's weekend dip was 23 percent, which is the lowest decline yet for the movie (its second weekend in theaters saw a 60 percent drop), according to Box Office Guru. And it wasn't far behind third-place "The Lucky One," which earned $11.3 following its second weekend.

It looks like the assembly of Earth's mightiest heroes won't even be able to stop Katniss' estimated goal. With "The Hunger Games" sitting comfortably with a domestic total of $372.4 million, it's going to take more than Thor and his mighty hammer to bring "Marvel's The Avengers" to the top. If "The Hunger Games" can rake in $400 million domestically (like box-office experts predicted), it would outperform the first films in both "Twilight" and "Harry Potter."

As audiences gear up for the highly anticipated Marvel film, only time will tell what this weekend will bring the first film in Katniss' franchise. And as far as the success of a sequel since Gary Ross is no longer on board to direct, it isn't something Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta, is particularly worried about.

"Gary, I think, brought so much to the movie, and he created that whole world that was so close to the book and so perfect in so many ways that it's going to be hard for Francis [Lawrence] to come in, for sure," Hutcherson told MTV News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. "But Francis is extremely talented and everyone I've talked to says he's the best guy in the world. So I think he's going to bring a lot [to the sequel]."

What film to you think will be the bigger box-office smash: "The Hunger Games" or "The Avengers"? Sound off in the comments! Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

Alistair Overeem, Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva?s move to Vegas and Dan Henderson fill Reader Rants

In a very busy week, despite the lack of fights this weekend, you all had plenty to talk about. Reader Rants covered Alistair Overeem's suspension, Anheuser-Busch's strong words towards the UFC, the Chael Sonnen/Anderson Silva move to Las Vegas, and how Dan Henderson will fare against Jon Jones. Do you want to see your thoughts in Reader Rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on the stories that show up in your newsfeed.

Not many of you bought Alistair Overeem's explanation for his elevated testosterone levels.

I want to believe Overeem, but where there is smoke, there is fire. The tests prior to the Lesnar fight had weird circumstances and now this? For a guy who proclaims innocence and knows the PED spotlight is squarely on his back, he should be the first to check the ingredients of anything he puts in his body. -- Ryan Wahl

I don't know science well enough, but he keeps on making excuses and doesn't really convince anyone that he's clean. Sure, he says everything with a straight face, but like Ryan said, where there's smoke, there's fire! -- Brandon Mendoza

Anheuser-Busch shared their displeasure with the UFC over the behavior of some fighters. One reader thought they should take a look inward.

I think it would be unfair if they let a few bad apples spoil the bunch. We're in such a sensitive age with the internet and social media, but UFC fighters aren't running around disparaging women, minorities or disabled people, they are making errant jokes like Anheuser-Busch does all the time. It's really too bad if a beer company with controversial commercials of it's own can't learn to turn the other cheek and just ask the UFC to introduce fines and consistency into it's policies about social media instead of threatening to pull their sponsorship. Talk about calling the kettle black. -- Joshua Smith

Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's rematch was moved to Las Vegas, and Silva isn't the only one disappointed in the move.

I'm disappointed, everyone has wanted to see how the fight is gonna go down on Anderson's home turf and this just helps Chael. It's still a good fight and if the card lives up to the hype it'll probably go down as the card of the year. -- Gabriel Martinez

Brazil fans are going to be disappointed in the UFC. This would've been the match they wanted out of any, and its been taken away from them. -- Manny Seda

Cagereaders had many answers for the question, how will Dan Henderson do against Jon Jones?

Hendo has NO advantages to use against Jones apart from experience. Height, reach, youth, strength, stamina, and the match all go to Jones. -- Donald Windley

Hendo will have to end it early, and he can do it! If Jones somehow manages to survive the 1st round (run instead of engage) and make it past half way into the second I think that the younger guy's ground game will be the difference. Too bad that, I say! Every MMA fan loves to see a knock out! Hendo deserves to go out a champ and Jones doesn't have the 'cred'. -- Kevin Astle

Google's Vulnerability Program ups the ante for helpful hackers

Google's Vulnerability Program ups the ante for helpful hackers

This is not your ordinary rewards program, it's Google's way of paying it forward... to hackers. After celebrating the one year anniversary of its unique initiative this past November -- in which the coding-inclined are compensated for exposing critical flaws across its suite of web services -- the folks over at Mountain View have updated the program's policies with a bigger chunk of cash. Previously, the search giant had set a max payout of $3,133.7 for any discovered vulnerabilities (a bizarre sum, we know), but that cap has now seen an increase up to $20,000 depending on the severity of the reported bug. For a company with billion dollar coffers, the move appears to be none other than a good faith investment in the security research community. But if you lean a bit closer to the paranoiac line, it could also be viewed as a countermeasure to other, higher-paying firms with less than honorable intentions. Whether your rose-colored glasses are on or off, it's still nice work if you can get paid for it. And who knows? You might even make it to the Security Hall of Fame.

YouTube?s very first video turns 7 years old today

With a service as big as?YouTube ? with literally dozens of hours of new content popping up every minute ? it's easy to forget how it all began. Today marks the seventh birthday of YouTube's very first clip which, like much of the site's user-generated content, is a bit humorous but almost entirely pointless.

The 19-second video is entitled?Me at the zoo, and it features YouTube co-founder?Jawed Karim as he talks a bit about elephants and their?really long trunks. The short clip has tallied nearly 7.5 million views since it popped online in April of 2005, which is an impressive number but nowhere near some of the heavy viral hitters like?Evolution of Dance (194 million views) or?Charlie bit my finger (448 million views).

In the seven years since its launch, YouTube has seen some truly explosive growth. The site now enjoys over 800 million unique viewers per month, watching over four billion videos each day. 60 hours of video is uploaded to the?streaming portal every minute, which is the equivalent of roughly 11,368 copies of?Me at the zoo. That's a lot of elephants.

TA Associates Invests In Q&A Site Answers.com

answers1Q&A platform Answers.com is announcing a 'significant' minority investment from private equity firm TA Associates. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. Answers operates a community-generated Q&A site at Answers.com, and was acquired by AFCV Holdings, a portfolio company of Summit Partners, for $127 million in cash last year. AFCV then delisted Answers, which was a public company, from the NASDAQ and took the company private. Shareholders were very unhappy with the terms of the deal, claiming it tremendously undervalued Answers.com, and tried to block the sale. Answers was also hit with a round of layoffs in June 2011.

Corn pricing affected by global warming, federal mandates not helping, study finds

Researchers out of Purdue and Stanford University have found evidence that small temperature increases over the next two decades could have a surprisingly drastic impact on the volatility of corn prices. And federal biofuel mandates may make things worse.

Geothermal, nuclear, wind, natural gas, soybean biodiesel, corn ethanol ? these are just some of the possible ways to thwart greenhouse gas emissions that spur global warming. Yet each technological option is far from perfect, and understandably, harbors its own unique complications.

A recent study published in Nature Climate Change, illustrates such a complication for biofuels derived from corn grown in the United States. Scientists found that, over the next two decades, climate change will probably increase the volatility of corn prices, even more so than expected factors like oil prices and trade policies. Biofuel mandates affect volatility too, and the study also suggests that such federal mandates could actually amplify the effect of rising temperature on the pricing of crop from the US corn belt.

"Frankly, I was surprised that climate had the largest effect of these three influences," said Noah Diffenbaugh of the Stanford?Woods Institute for the Environment in a recent Stanford Press Release. "These are substantial changes in price volatility that come from relatively moderate global warming."

This research, funded by the Department of Energy, illuminates two interrelated problems. The first: even if climate change stays within the internationally established "safe" limit of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above preindustrial temperatures, a smaller temperature change could still drive up the frequency of severe heatwaves in the US, which would in turn sharply increase the volatility of corn yields, the study suggests.

The second is the constraining effect federal biofuel mandates have on the corn market. This has already been demonstrated before, as the mandates encouraged farmers to plant more corn instead of, for example, soybeans, which historically drove up the price of soy. Without regulation, the corn market, in a particularly temperate season, could allocate more of its crop to biofuel production. Alternatively, in a season of severe heat, it could keep more of its crop for food supplies, thus satisfying demand for the US's dominant crop, and keeping prices down. But under the current federal scheme, the market does not have this flexibility.

Though the study found a surprisingly strong link between climate change and corn price volatility, the researchers noted a relatively small projected impact on overall food prices. They did, however, speculate that if US corn farmers could not increase their crops' heat tolerance by as much as 6 degrees Fahrenheit, much of the US corn belt would have to migrate north, toward the Canadian border, to escape the oppressive heat extremes.

Discussion of how rising temperatures will affect corn prices seems far removed from the national debate over climate policy, which is still focused on whether or not fossil fuels contribute to global warming (almost all climate scientists say that they do).?

Corn-based biofuels have received regulatory encouragement since the Energy Tax Act of 1978, a part of the larger National Energy Act that promoted the shift of US energy to renewable and more efficient sources. Congressional intentions aside, there has been increasing public discussion about the real value of biofuels, both environmentally and economically.

Robert F. Service, writing?in Science Magazine?in 2009, highlighted the underreported strain on water resources biofuels would impose. Whereas refining oil requires 10 to 40 liters of water to produce one megawatt hour, corn ethanol irrigation requires between two and eight million liters to produce the same supply. In essence, Service writes, "an increased reliance on biofuel trades an oil problem for a water problem."

Bulletins Live ? Technology Ruins Relationships

By The Staff

On Sunday, Tupac Shakur rose from the dead and joined Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre on stage at Coachella, a well-known music festival held in Indio, Calif.

What the f**k is up Coachella, a shirtless Shakur shouted, as he appeared on stage in the form of a hologram. The audience was speechless because, despite conspiracy theories, Shakur has been dead for 15 years.

Using a hologram to resurrect the dead is a form of technology that poses concern. It started with Shakur, but at this rate, there will be concert tours resurrecting Aaliyah, Biggie Smalls, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.

Although this form of technology gives individuals the ability to reconnect with the past, present relationships and connections should be our primary focus. Thanks to technological advancements, society is relying more and more on social media, video chats, and text messages to connect and communicate. But technology doesnt allow people to fully express their emotions.

Face-to-face interaction has diminished. Friends have become acquaintances and acquaintances have become strangers. We have lost the intimate bond created by in-person contact.

There is a serious problem when individuals are able to hold an intellectual conversation or argument via mobile texting or social media outlets, but awkwardly scuffle past each other when crossing paths in person. About a decade ago, such actions were cowardly.

This is also true for the professional sphere. It is now normal for an employer to interview a potential job or internship candidate via Skype or telephone when this does not do an individual justice. Body language and personalities cannot be identified through a projector or screen, but this generation has been a strong advocate for cultivating formal relationships digitally.

There is no doubt that technological advancements have positively impacted society, but social media and technology should be an alternative form of human interaction, not a replacement. Humanity used to be defined by its ability to communicate. Now, however, virtual forms of communication are creating disconnect. Technology may be increasing the ability of humanity to be the superior species, but it is degrading our ability to be human.

Find ways to keep face-to-face interaction relevant. Express your feelings verbally rather than through a text message, video chat, or social media status update. Technology will continue to advance and people will continue to communicate through these media, but relationships will always be healthiest when maintained through physical interactions. Were human beings, not robots.

Chronicle of a trial foretold: Breivik is following his manifesto's script

Anders Behring Breivik's manifesto includes instructions on what a 'Templar' should do if tried in a European court.

Among the early headlines from the fourth day of the trial of Anders Behring Breivik for the murder of 77 people last July was that, for the first time, Mr. Breivik did not perform his now-familiar clenched-fist salute upon arrival at the court. Several families of Breivik's victims said they found the salute offensive, and his lawyers apparently were able to convince him to stop and avoid undermining his case.

But the drop of the salute is not only significant for its effect on his defense's strategy. It also marks a significant departure from Breivik's playbook: his 1,500-page manifesto. Breivik wrote extensively not only about his own beliefs about the alleged activities of "the Marxist tyrants of Europe" and the mission of the Knights Templar, or "Templars," the group to which he claims to belong. He also wrote a comprehensive set of instructions and guidelines for what a Templar should do if tried in a European court. He appears to be following it to the extent he is able.

Breivik wrote a short section on his salute, which he claims to be "the military salutation" of the Templars. He writes that the salute, which he recommends being performed in a white glove, symbolizes strength, purity, and resistance against "the Marxist tyrants of Europe." Interestingly, he claims the salute has nothing to do with either racist "white power" salutes or with the similar, open-palmed Nazi salute.

While Breivik's manifesto does not mention the salute specifically in reference to a trial, its use at trial fits closely into what Breivik argues is the best way to use trials: as propaganda. Breivik writes that after being captured, "the subsequent court proceedings may present several propaganda opportunities." He adds that "This trial is (from our point of view), not against you but rather a trial against the regime."

One of the key openings for propaganda that Breivik saw is the opportunity to present an opening and closing statement. Breivik includes a four-page sample opening statement, which he seemed to use as a source for his own.?

His sample draws parallels between the quest of the "Templars" and that of Native American leaders like Sitting Bull ? parallels he made on the first day of testimony in his own trial. As the Monitor reported, ?Were they terrorists for fighting for their indigenous culture ? or were they heroes?? Breivik asked the court. ?My acts are based on goodness, not evil,? he added. ?If anyone is vicious it is the Socialists.?

In the manifesto, Breivik also outlines a dress code for Templars, which he says should be adhered to in court. "Our dress uniform ... will be used for the sole?purpose of representing the authority of our military order and tribunal during trial," he writes. The uniform is to include a US Marine Corp dress jacket in dark blue or black, dress pants in the same color, and an extensive set of medals and decorations including epaulettes and Templar badges. Judging from the photos of his appearances in court, Breivik seems to have been following his own dress code as best he can, though he has appeared sans pseudo-military decorations.

In his game plan for Templar trial appearances, Breivik shows every expectation of losing. The heading for his sample closing statement reads: "Closing statement ? last day of trial, after judgment (guilty)." But he also expresses hope that the trial may lead to the introduction of stiffer criminal sentences, and perhaps even introduction of the death penalty, which is currently illegal in Norway.

The trial itself may not end up as anything else than a formality where the goal can be to change the law, forcing the parliament of that country to introduce the death penalty, or harshen the penal laws in other ways. Indirectly forcing the parliament of your country to change the laws will be an indirect victory to our movement because it will provide significant media coverage of our cause and thus will contribute to future recruitment efforts.

Breivik echoed this thinking during his second day of testimony, the Monitor reported.

?No, I don?t want [capital punishment], but I would have respected that,? he said, adding that if Norway doubled the current maximum sentence it would ?serve his cause? and ?prove Norway had thrown their principles out the window."

Samsung Galaxy S III auf Amazon.de

Guten tag, mein freund! A listing for the Samsung Galaxy S3 has appeared on the German Amazon site, complete with an "Add to Cart" and "Add to Wishlist" button. Go add it to your wishlist if you want, we'll wait. It's not unusual to see placeholder pages for highly anticipated new electronics weeks before they are available, or even announced, but there's an interesting twist here.

That twist is the listed specs. Nobody who's talking knows what they are, and everything you've read so far is an educated guess. I'll say it again, in terms that can't be misconstrued -- only the folks at Samsung involved with the product know the specs. They aren't telling anyone, and we're all just guessing and amalgamating all the rumors. But as the folks at BestBoyz.de point out, Amazon may have to list real specifications to allow for a pre-order of sorts by dropping it in your wishlist. Here's what Amazon has to say about the SGS3:

  • 11.9 (4.7 inches) Super AMOLED touchscreen with 16 million colors
  • 12-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash and face detection
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system
  • 16 GB of internal memory, expandable up to 32GB
  • Delivery: Phone, battery, charger, data cable, headset, manual (Note: exact scope of delivery are not known)

I'll go out on a limb and say that at least two items from that list are true -- it will ship with ICS, and the "exact scope of delivery are not known". As for the rest? We're not lawyers. We're definitely not German commerce law specialists, no matter how much beer we drink or how many Knödel we eat. It is neat fuel for the SGS3 fire, so have at it boys and girls. We're just going to wait until May 3 and find out in London.
