Why cardio counts! - Health & Fitness Advisory

2013Feb26_Cardio_AThink back, if you can, to the days of legwarmers, leotards and the complexity that was the archetypal aerobics class ? complicated dance moves taking you to the point of crashing and burning exhaustion. These were the days when all most people knew about fitness is that if you want to be healthy you need cardio. While fitness trends have evolved and changed, cardio is ever-present but how much do you actually understand it?

Could you give a good definition of cardio? Why is it important? And, what exercises or workouts involve cardio? The world of health and fitness has never been as exciting, varied and progressive as it is in 2013. However, it?s worth not forgetting some of the basics of exercise which will never go out of fashion or favor.

What is cardio?
Cardio is short for cardiovascular, and is exercise that benefits a healthy heart system as well as your respiratory functions. In essence, cardio, or aerobic exercise is when you raise your heart rate is raised above normal and maintained over a certain period of time. On a basic level, if you?re feeling the pace and you?re breaking out in a sweat then you?re more likely than not working out at an aerobic level.

What is the cardio heart rate?
Many wear heart rate monitors so that they monitor as they exercise, which is vital in working out at the right intensity. With your heart rate monitor you can aim for different levels of cardio. Most people use a monitor by calculating their Maximum Heart Rate (MHR), a rough approximation is: 220 ? your age. From there they aim for different levels of intensity.

  • Low intensity is 60-70% of your MHR
  • Moderate intensity which will tone and aid weight loss is 70-80%
  • High intensity ? a real fat burner is 80-90%
  • Maximum ? for short bursts such as interval training is 90-100%

Why is cardo important?
Many fitness professionals advocate cardio work with other forms of exercise that perhaps focus more on building and toning muscles. However, aerobic workouts will definitely yield some great results:

  • Strengthen heart & lungs
  • Improve body?s ability to maintain health
  • Burn fat and help you lose weight
  • Boost metabolism
  • Reduce stress
  • Release energy

What exercises are cardio?
A a general rule of thumb, if your routine is more focused on stretching the less likely it is to incorporate cardio. There are some great ways to get your heart rate high:

  • Fitness class ? aerobics, step, dance fitness
  • Treadmill
  • Ellipticls
  • Rowing machine
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • BOSU
  • PX90
  • TRX Suspension Training
  • Jump rope

Numerous reasons exist as to why cardio should count in your life, and many ways in which you can raise the intensity and the tempo of your exercise routine. Check your workout intensity and make sure you?re working at a comfortable, optimal pace. Don?t be afraid to work up a sweat, there?s nothing as exhilarating as a good exercise session!

UK cardinal contests 'inappropriate' acts claims

LONDON (AP) ? The Vatican is looking into allegations of "inappropriate behavior" by Cardinal Keith O'Brien, Britain's most senior Catholic cleric, officials said Sunday. The claims came at a sensitive time, as O'Brien and other cardinals prepare for a conclave to choose the next pope.

O'Brien, who heads the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, was taking advice from lawyers after British newspaper The Observer reported that three priests and a former priest have filed complaints to the Vatican alleging that the cardinal approached them in an inappropriate manner.

The paper did not cite the names of the priests, but it said their allegations date back to the 1980s.

"Cardinal O'Brien contests these claims and is taking legal advice," Peter Kearney, a spokesman for the Scottish Catholic Church, said. He declined to comment further.

A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the complaints had been channeled through the office of the papal nuncio ? the Vatican's ambassador ? in London. "The pope has been informed, and the question is in his hands," Lombardi said.

In the coming weeks, O'Brien, 74, is expected to join a conclave of cardinals at the Vatican to elect the next pontiff, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Benedict announced earlier this month that he will step down on Thursday ? the first pope to resign in some 600 years.

O'Brien has not been the only cardinal to become embroiled in negative news as the papal election approaches. Across the Atlantic, thousands of people have signed a petition to keep California Cardinal Roger Mahony from the conclave because of revelations he had shielded sexually abusive priests.

Mahony has made it clear he will attend the gathering and that no one can force him to recuse himself.

In comments on the papacy made to the BBC on Friday, O'Brien said the next pope would be free to consider changing church policy on issues that were not "basic dogmatic beliefs." He said he believed that the requirement for priestly celibacy is not "of divine origin" and could be reconsidered.

O'Brien also said it was time to think seriously about having a pope from outside Europe. He said he would be "open to a pope from anywhere if I thought it was the right man, whether it was Europe or Asia or Africa or wherever."

The cardinal is due to retire when he turns 75 in March.

Medical copter crashes in Okla., kills 2, hurts 1

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? The company that operates a medical helicopter that crash-landed outside an Oklahoma City nursing home early Friday, killing two people onboard and critically injuring a third, had just recently undergone an exhaustive accreditation process, officials said.

Wichita, Kan.-based EagleMed LLC just received its three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services in October, said Eileen Frazer, the commission's executive director.

The company's review included an analysis of maintenance records of all its aircraft and crew, including pilots.

A three-man crew was onboard the helicopter when it crashed while headed from Oklahoma City to Watonga, 70 miles away, to pick up a patient, said Fire Department Battalion Chief Marc Woodard. No one on the ground was seriously injured or killed.

Two men in the helicopter, including the pilot, were killed, Nursing home workers were able to pull the lone survivor from the wreckage, and he was taken to a hospital, Woodard said.

Officials at Integris-Baptist Medical Center, where the helicopter was based, identified those killed as pilot Mark Montgomery and flight nurse Chris Denning. Paramedic Billy Wynn was in critical condition Friday evening at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, Integris President Bruce Lawrence said in an email to employees.

A spokesman for EagleMed did not return telephone messages on Friday.

The crash occurred between the St. Ann Retirement Center and the St. Ann Nursing Home, which are operated by the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. Witnesses said there were two explosions.

"I was awake and I heard this boom and it shook my bed," said Betty Steel, who lives in a retirement village adjacent to the nursing home.

Rachel Njafuh said when she arrived for work at the nursing home, flames and smoke were pouring from the wreckage.

"My colleagues pulled a man from the (helicopter) just before a second explosion," she said.

Oklahoma City received a dusting of snow from a large storm system that has been moving eastward through the nation's midsection this week. Woodard said the skies were clear Friday morning when the helicopter crash-landed in the northwest of the city.

"I think the pilot did a miraculous job landing it where he did," Woodard said. "It's 65 feet from a nursing home on one side and 150 feet from a retirement village on the other."

Federal Aviation Administration investigators were at the scene within hours, combing through the helicopter's charred remains. An investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board was en route late Friday afternoon, an NTSB spokesman said.

One person on the ground suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, said Lara O'Leary, a spokeswoman with Emergency Medical Services Authority.

In July 2010, an EagleMed helicopter crashed in a field in Kingfisher, about 50 miles northwest of Oklahoma. The helicopter's pilot and a nurse onboard the aircraft were killed in the crash.

On that flight, the EagleMed helicopter was headed from Oklahoma City to pick up a patient at a hospital 90 miles away. The National Transportation Safety Board has not yet released a probable-cause report from the 2010 crash.

Stocks rally to close near session highs

Stocks finished near session highs Friday, recovering from a two-day slump, lifted by upbeat economic data from Europe and after comments from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard that the central bank's aggressive easy money policy will stay for a "long time."

The Dow eked out a slim weekly gain, avoiding its third-consecutive weekly decline. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 posted its first weekly loss this year, snapping its seven-week win streak.

"We're seeing some signs that the weekend anxiety is not that heavy," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services. "We have the Italian election coming up [this weekend] and a sign that I look at is the U.S. dollar?it was higher this morning on some anxiety and there was a bit of a flight to safety in Treasurys, but that's abating and that's telling me that [the market's] not too concerned about the weekend so that's why we're having a good rally."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied more than 100 points, led by Hewlett-Packard and Home Depot, while UnitedHealth dragged. Interestingly, the blue-chip index has so far posted a gain every Friday of this year, matching the Friday win streak from July through September of 2012.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also finished near session highs. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded below 15.

All key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by materials and techs.

Meanwhile, traders said leaked reports that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has been downplaying worries that quantitative easing has spawned asset bubbles also helped lift markets.

Bernanke is scheduled to testify before lawmakers next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier, St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said the Fed remained committed to aggressive easing measures in the form of its $85 billion a month bond-buying program.

"It's true that the committee is thinking about how are we going to handle this later this year, but that's a natural thing for the committee to be talking about," Bullard told CNBC's "Squawk Box." "Fed policy is very easy and it's going stay easy for a long time."

Uncertainty about the future of the central bank's bond buying program weighed on the stock market in the last two days.

Minutes from the Fed's meeting in January, released on Wednesday, showed policymakers were growing concerned about the impact of quantitative easing, suggesting the central bank may taper off its $85 billion per month purchasesearlier than expected.

Meanwhile, the firm increased its quarterly dividend to 20 cents a share from 17.5 cents a share. Shares tumbled to lead the S&P 500 laggards.

Hewlett-Packard soared to lead the S&P 500 gainers after the computer hardware giant easily topped Wall Street expectations and handed in current-quarter and full-year earnings guidance that topped forecasts. At least three brokerages lifted their price target on the company.

Texas Instruments jumped to lead the Nasdaq 100 gainers after the chipmaker raised its dividend by 33 percent and boosted its stock buyback program.

Darden warned it expects to see third-quarter earnings of between $1 a share and $1.02 a share, against current Wall Street expectations for $1.12 a share, hurt by economic headwinds, including rising gas prices and higher payroll taxes.

European shares ended broadly higherfollowing positive economic news from Germany and ahead of Italy's general election this weekend.

German business sentiment jumped at its fastest rate since July 2010 in February, suggesting the country is rebounding after its weak fourth quarter.

Scientists make older adults less forgetful in memory tests

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Scientists at Baycrest Health Sciences' Rotman Research Institute (RRI) and the University of Toronto's Psychology Department have found compelling evidence that older adults can eliminate forgetfulness and perform as well as younger adults on memory tests.

Scientists used a distraction learning strategy to help older adults overcome age-related forgetting and boost their performance to that of younger adults. Distraction learning sounds like an oxymoron, but a growing body of science is showing that older brains are adept at processing irrelevant and relevant information in the environment, without conscious effort, to aid memory performance.

"Older brains may be be doing something very adaptive with distraction to compensate for weakening memory," said Ren?e Biss, lead investigator and PhD student. "In our study we asked whether distraction can be used to foster memory-boosting rehearsal for older adults. The answer is yes!"

"To eliminate age-related forgetfulness across three consecutive memory experiments and help older adults perform like younger adults is dramatic and to our knowledge a totally unique finding," said Lynn Hasher, senior scientist on the study and a leading authority in attention and inhibitory functioning in younger and older adults. "Poor regulation of attention by older adults may actually have some benefits for memory."

The findings, published online February 21 in Psychological Science, ahead of print publication, have intriguing implications for designing learning strategies for the mature, older student and equipping senior-housing with relevant visual distraction cues throughout the living environment that would serve as rehearsal opportunities to remember things like an upcoming appointment or medications to take, even if the cues aren't consciously paid attention to.

The study

In three experiments, healthy younger adults recruited from the University of Toronto (aged 17- 27) and healthy older adults from the community (aged 60 -- 78) were asked to study and recall a list of words after a short delay and again, on a surprise test, after a 15-minute delay.

During the delay period, half of the studied words occurred again as distraction while people were doing a very simple attention task on pictures. Although repeating words as distracters had no impact on the memory performance of young adults, it boosted older adults' memory for those words by 30% relative to words that had not repeated as distraction.

"Our findings point to exciting possibilities for using strategically-placed relevant distraction as memory aids for older adults -- whether it's in classroom, at home or in a long term care environment," said Biss.

While older adults are watching television or playing a game on a tablet, boosting memory for goals (such as remembering to make a phone call or send a holiday card) could be accomplished by something as simple as running a stream of target information across the bottom of their tablet or TV.

The study was supported by a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

From 'Destiny' to 'Deep Down,' a look at PS4 games

Sony may not have revealed what, exactly, its forthcoming game machine ? the PlayStation 4 ? will look like, but on Wednesday the electronics giant and its partners did give the world a look at some of the games it will play.

At an event in New York City, Sony announced that it will launch the successor to the PlayStation 3 this holiday season (for more on that, check out this story). In doing so, the company introduced a host of game developers and publishers who took to the stage to talk about and show off the thing that will surely be most important to those considering buying a PS4 ? games, games and more games.

And the games they showed off all had one thing in common ? they looked absolutely stunning.

For a peek at the graphical splendor on display, read on for a recap of the PS4's forthcoming games and a more in-depth look at them in action.

"Knack"

Sony kicked off the game reveals with its own first-party title "Knack." The colorful, action game stars a unique creature that changes sizes and abilities as he helps humanity fight off a goblin army.

Check out the first trailer for "Knack" below, and you'll see that it looks like part game, part animated film.

"Deep Down"

Capcom touted the power of the PlayStation 4 as it announced a brand new fantasy game called "Deep Down." Capcom's Yoshinori Ono said the company is developing the game along with a new engine called Panta Rhei which will "allow us to take game design in entirely new directions."

Take a look at the "Deep Down" reveal trailer right here:

"Watch Dogs"

Ubisoft said Wednesday that "Watch Dogs" ? its highly anticipated game of surveillance and hacking ? will be a PlayStation 4 launch title.

?Ubisoft has a strong history of supporting new technologies with unique and creative offerings,? said Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's CEO. ?The power and capability of the PS4 allows the 'Watch Dogs' team to further push the boundaries of what was previously thought possible in interactive entertainment.?

The company showed off a new demo, highlighting "Watch Dog's" open world gameplay. Here it is:

"Destiny"

Famed game development company Bungie revealed Wednesday that it will be straying from Xbox territory into PlayStation territory. Bungie created the Halo franchise ? a franchise that is exclusively available on Microsoft's Xbox machines. But the company, which parted ways with Microsoft in 2007, announced Wednesday that it will bring its newly revealed project "Destiny" to the PlayStation 4.

"'Destiny' is being developed for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, with both versions available at 'Destiny's' launch," said Harold Ryan, president of Bungie. "'Destiny' will also feature exclusive in-game content, only available on PlayStation."

Not to worry Xbox fans. Bungie says "Destiny" is coming to the Xbox 360, too (and we expect it will launch on Microsoft's yet-to-be-revealed new game machine as well). Below you'll find new "Destiny" footage, released especially for Wednesday's PlayStation event.

"InFamous: Second Son"

As Sucker Punch's Nate Fox introduced "InFamous: Second Son" on Wednesday, he told the audience about being tear-gassed by police during a protest. That experience seems to have influenced his company's latest game.

"Second Son" is set in Seattle at a time when surveillance and civil rights violations are the norm and will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive. It is a brand new installment in the InFamous franchise and not only stars a new protagonist ? Delsin Rowe ? but takes place eight years after the last game in the series.

Sucker Punch says of its new project, "Delsin is going to ask questions that are not just relevant to the world of 'Second Son' ? but to the world we all live in today. A world where we are often instructed to surrender our freedoms to help improve our security."

Check out the "Second Son" reveal trailer here:

"Killzone: Shadow Fall"

Hermen Hulst, co-founder of Guerrilla Games, introduced the gorgeous-looking "Killzone: Shadow Fall" Wednesday. The futuristic shooter is the latest in the Killzone franchise. Check out his presentation and the first footage of the game below.

"Driveclub"

?We?re making the game we?ve always wanted to make,? said Matt Southern from Evolution Studios as he introuced "Driveclub." ?We?ve waited for the technology to be available to deliver our vision.?

He said that, thanks to the PS4, "Diveclub" will not only deliver eye-popping next generation graphics, but the team-based racing game will give players and racing clubs the ability to be more connected than ever as they put the (virtual) pedal to the (virtual) metal. Check out the below trailer for a look at just how incredibly detailed the cars in the game are.

"The Witness"

Respected indie developer Jonathan Blow ? creator of the critically acclaimed puzzle game "Braid" ? showed off his newest project Wednesday, announcing that "The Witness" will arrive first on the PlayStation 4 during the machine's "launch window."

"It's a game where you explore a mysterious abandoned island and solve the puzzles that you find there," he explained. "But at its heart ? at its core ? it's a game about epiphany. It's about that instantaneous transition of the mind that takes you from confusion to understanding."

Blow added that "The Witness" is set in an open world allowing players to go wherever they want to. But he said, "whereas most games in open worlds try to make their worlds as big as possible so you'll be impressed by the sheer scale of the endeavor, in 'The Witness' we're trying to make the world as compact as possible so that you have a very dense experience that makes the best use of your time."

Intrigued? Here's a look at the game:

"Final Fantasy" and "Diablo 3"

So many games. So little time. Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto revealed that his company will bring a new Final Fantasy game to the PlayStation 4 and said it will be shown off for the first time this summer at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Blizzard ? which is best known for its PC games ? said it is taking "Diablo 3" from the PC to both the PS4 and the PS3.

Beautiful tech demos

Some companies didn't have games to reveal Wednesday, but instead fired up tech demos to show off the PlayStation 4's abilities.

David Cage from the renowned studio Quantic Dream, talked up how the PlayStation 4 will allow developers to create extremely realistic-looking characters. He then showed off how his team had been able to use the PlayStation 4 to create the head and face of an elderly man, rendered in stunning detail ? the kind of stunning detail he said was "previously reserved for CG films."

"We start to reach a point where you can see very subtle emotions on the face of a character," he said as the elderly digital man in the demo crinkled his eyes. "You can feel his emotions just looking at his face.

Meanwhile, Media Molecule ? the development company behind the LittleBigPlanet games ? demonstrated a tool that would enable players to use the PlayStation Move controller and the PS4 to craft digital sculptures and bring them to life.

So PlayStation fans ? what did you think of the PS4 games shown off Wednesday? Did they make you want to start saving your money for the new machine (even though, well, Sony hasn't said yet how much it will cost)?

For a further look at Sony's event, check out InGame editor Todd Kenreck's first look at the PlayStation 4in the video below:

Rising Foreclosure Filings Expand the Shadow Inventory | The ...

?

Housing market analysts and observers who warned about a spike in foreclosure filings after the National Mortgage Foreclosure Settlement Agreement of last year are seeing their projections come validated in the latest report by RealtyTrac, the California-based real estate analytics firm that specializes in foreclosure data.

RealtyTrac?s 2012 Year-End Metropolitan Foreclosure Market Report indicates that default and lis pendens filings increased by 57 percent across 212 metropolitan housing markets. Two of Florida?s regional housing markets that were particularly affected by the bursting of the housing bubble saw a substantial increase: Tampa and Miami. The latter city saw its rate of foreclosure filings increase by 36 percent compared to 2011, and Tampa experienced an astonishing 80 percent.

Shadow Inventory Broods Larger

The Sunshine State has taken the lead in foreclosure filings, but this does not mean that median home prices in Florida are bound to be affected. Eight out of the 20 metropolitan housing markets with the highest rates of foreclosure in RealtyTrac?s report are in Florida, and real estate analysts are concerned that this is causing inflated prices and slow sales.

A recent opinion piece by Florida real property attorney Roy Oppenheim in U.S. News and World Report explains that real estate investors are at odds with the banks that are holding on to their Real Estate Owned (REO) portfolios. With too many foreclosures in the pipeline, the available inventory is depleted. This leads to an artificial sellers? market and upsets investors.

On one hand, banks would be at a disadvantage if they decide to release too many of these REO properties at once because they have their capital reserves and balance sheets to protect. Housing investors, on the other hand, would like to see a flood of these distressed properties hit the market so that they can take advantage of the budding housing market recovery. Special interest groups are pressing Florida?s lawmakers on this issue; they are calling for an expedited process in one of the slowest judicial foreclosure states in the U.S.

The Silver Linings

Florida does not take first place in the slowest foreclosures category, but real estate speculation has traditionally been part of the Sunshine State?s economy. Some housing analysts think that Florida may be left out of the next real estate bonanza, but this is good news for other markets across the nation such as Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Those housing markets are seeing drops in their foreclosure filings from 37 percent to 24 percent, which has caused a flock of investors and home shoppers to those areas.

Dorner manhunt: These 5 accused killers still elude cops

Redlands, Calif., police officers man a blockade near the entrance to the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California on Tuesday during the manhunt for Christopher Dorner.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

For six days this month, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service joined local enforcement in the desperate search for cop-turned-killer Christopher Dorner. The biggest manhunt Los Angeles has ever seen is now over, but there is no shortage of suspects in cold-blooded murders commanding the attention of federal agents.

The worst of them have been given spots on two lists: the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and the Marshals Service's' top 15 fugitives. The rosters are a catalog of atrocities: a mother and two children with their throats slit, a little girl kidnapped and strangled, an armored-car guard ambushed after a pickup.

"It's a full-court press with these people," said Lenny DePaul, a U.S. Marshals commander who heads one of the agency's seven regional task forces devoted to capturing violent fugitives.

"There's funding, there's resources, there's travel -- no boundaries when it comes to a top 15 case."

The FBI's most-wanted each has at least one agent in a field office assigned to each case, bolstered by a special unit at headquarters in Washington which can "bring all the tools out of the toolboxes," said Jayne Challman, chief of the Violent Crimes Threat Section.

The suspects are on the two lists because the crimes are heinous, but also because the feds think extra attention and publicity will help catch them.

"I could name a thousand cases that could be on the top 15," said DePaul, who noted that the only way to get off the Marshals' list is in handcuffs or a coffin.

Since the FBI list was established in 1950, 497 fugitives have earned the dubious distinction, and all but 30 of them have been caught. The longest anyone has lingered is 28 years -- Victor Manuel Gerena, who is still wanted for a terrifying bank robbery in 1983.

DePaul said every lead on a top 15 case is followed up, quickly and exhaustively. Though many turn out to be dead ends, the marshals keep looking for the one that will let them cross another name off the list.

"They make mistakes," he said of the suspects. "Their resources run out, they communicate with someone, they slip up. Their luck runs out."

Here are some of the accused killers on the FBI and Marshals' list whose luck hasn't run out -- yet:

Andrew Neverson: He's a ladies' man with the "gift of gab" -- and a hair-trigger temper, investigators say. Neverson, 48, is wanted for the back-to-back murders of his sister and ex-girlfriend and has eluded capture for more than a decade.

Born in Trinidad, he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., as a teenager, but was deported in 2000 after serving five years for shooting a girlfriend's uncle five times. His family helped him sneak back into the U.S. months later with a bogus passport -- a fatal mistake, according to the marshals.

U.S. Marshals

In 2002, Neverson allegedly killed his sister, Patricia Neverson, 39, with a gunshot to the head after an argument over money. Three days later, police found the body of Neverson's girlfriend, Donna Davis, 34, in a vacant lot. Police believe she was kidnapped and shot dead after breaking up with him.

The muscular 6-foot-2 suspect vanished for four months, then turned up with a gun, demanding to see his 2-year-old daughter, the feds say. By the time the cops found out, he was in the wind again. U.S. marshals, who put him on the most-wanted list in 2004, suspect he may have returned to Trinidad and could be supporting himself as a bouncer or by buying and selling cars.

Meanwhile, his New York relatives live in fear.

"I can never totally be safe," Akim Neverson, his nephew, told the New York Post in 2010. "When I'm walking, and it's dark or I'm in a crowd of people, I have to keep an extra eye out. I can't really ever be comfortable knowing he's out there."

Jason Derek Brown: He was a ringer for Sean Penn, with a back-story that a Hollywood producer would love. Brown was a Mormon missionary who earned a master's degree in international business before he morphed into something of a playboy, a club-hopping snowboarder and skier who drove fancy cars, the FBI says.

In 2004, while buried under debt from living the high life, he pumped five bullets into armored-car guard Robert Palomares, 24, and fled with $56,000 in cash receipts from a Phoenix movie theater, authorities allege.

Agents have followed some tantalizing leads: a Cadillac linked to Brown found in Portland in 2005 and a sighting in 2008 in Salt Lake City by someone who had been in missionary training with him. The 43-year-old, who was added to the FBI's top 10 list five years ago, hasn't been seen since.

Investigators say the one-time golf-equipment salesman is highly intelligent, fluent in French and comfortable in international settings. His wanted poster notes that he "enjoys being the center of attention," a trait he's apparently managed to keep in check for the last eight years.

Daniel William Hiers Jr.: He's a fugitive-tracker's worst nightmare: an ex-cop who knows how to hunt, has martial-arts training and once said he'd rather die than go to prison.

Hiers, 40, who spent 11 years on the force in South Carolina, hid his depravity behind all-American looks and a shiny badge, authorities say.

Daniel William Hiers, Jr.

In 2004, the married officer allegedly befriended a single mom and then molested her 10-year-old daughter for months. He was arrested, suspended from his job and released on bond -- then failed to surrender to face new charges in March 2005.

His mother went looking for him at his Goose Creek house and got no answer. Instead, his wife of seven years, Ludmila, was found dead in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head. While on the lam, Hiers was charged with the 24-year-old's murder.

"I never imagined something like this could happen," the victim's mother, Sueli Cohe de Araujo, said in 2008, after traveling from her native Brazil to South Carolina for?at a candlelight memorial marking the third anniversary of the slaying.

Hiers' Chevrolet Aveo was found in the border city of Laredo, Texas, three months after the murder, according to the Marshals Service. Weeks later, he was added to the most-wanted list, but purported sightings from Colorado to Toronto have not panned out.

Robert William Fisher: The crime was beyond horrific: a Scottsdale, Ariz., mother and two children with their throats slit from ear-to-ear, their home devoured by flames after a gas explosion. Just as disturbing was the revelation that Fisher, husband and father of the victims, was the suspect.

Investigators have called Fisher, 51, an "ultra-control freak." Police documents obtained by the Arizona Republic suggest the cardiac technician and former Navy firefighter may have snapped after his wife, Mary, got fed up with his philandering and domestic tyranny and started talking about divorce. He allegedly put a bullet in her head before blowing up the house to cover up the crime.

The last time Fisher was seen was the day of the slaughter, taking $280 out of an ATM. Ten days later, police found his car and the family dog in his favorite hunting spot. The FBI put him on its list in 2002 and the agent in charge of the case gets tips every week; all of them have turned out to be false leads.

An avid hunter and fisherman with an extensive gun collection, investigators believe the suspect could be surviving in the outdoors. They say he walks very erect with his chest pushed out because of a back injury, has a gold tooth on his upper left first bicuspid, likes to hang out at strip clubs, and favors Copenhagen chewing tobacco.

Alexis Flores: In the years after 5-year-old Iriana DeJesus was abducted, sexually assaulted and murdered, authorities had her suspected killer in their grasp twice. They just didn't know it.

FBI.gov

It wasn't until 2007 -- seven years after the shocking slaying in Philadelphia -- that DNA tied Flores to the homicide, the FBI says. By then, he had already been deported to his native Honduras for crimes that pale in comparison.

"Now we have a name, now we have a face," the victim's mother, Lizasuain DeJesus, told NBCPhiladelphia.com in 2010, when Flores' name was added to the FBI list.

Her daughter was missing for five days in August 2000 before her body was found in a nearby apartment building. The preschooler had been strangled, police said.

Detectives began hunting for a drifter known only as Carlos, who had come to the neighborhood with a hard-luck story and been offered clothing and shelter, but had only a sketch to go on.

Flores, meanwhile, headed west. In 2002, he was arrested in Arizona for shoplifting. Two years later, he was busted for giving cops fake ID. That was a felony, and his DNA was collected and, the feds say, eventually matched to Iriana's case.

Those who knew the victim say they can't rest until Flores is captured.

It?s so tough on all of us. We just want justice," said C.J. Waddy, who was her preschool teacher and helps organize a memorial every year. "We want to get that phone call that they caught him. We want to know the person responsible for taking her away from us is getting everything he deserves."

If you're slurping pond scum, then you're likely to have greater health issues to worry about than mere detoxification.

It is supposedly able to bind to mercury, lead and cadmium. I don't know if this would detox you as such (since it would just do this in the intestine ) but eating it in combination with fish might make the fish safer if the fish was contaminated with mercury (as some fish are). So I would use it when eating a fish meal. It is also a source of omega 3 fat, which is a good thing. I have read that the reason fish tend to be high in omega 3 fat is that they get it from eating the algae themselves.
