Best- and worst-run cities in America

3 hrs.

The population of the United States living in urban areas is growing faster than the national rate. At last count, more than four in five Americans lived in a metropolitan area, an increase of over 12 percent in the last decade. Meanwhile, the proportion of Americans living in rural areas declined. If this trend continues, nearly all Americans will live in megacities in the near future.

Regardless of whether this happens, more pressure will be placed on mayors to manage their growing populations. 24/7 Wall St. has completed its second annual ranking of the 100 largest cities in the U.S., based on local economies, fiscal management and quality of life measures. To evaluate how well a city is managed over the long-term, we looked at factors like the city's credit rating, poverty, education, crime, unemployment, and regional GDP. The best-run city this year is Plano, Texas. The worst-run is San Bernardino, Calif.

Measuring the effective governance of a city and comparing it to others can be challenging. Each city has its own unique challenges and advantages. The strength of the regional economy, the level of state funding, and the presence of major corporations or industries can all impact a city?s prospects. They play a big part in a city?s employment levels, safety and fiscal stability.

All those factors, of course, are directly affected by how a city is managed. Mayors, school boards, and city councils all have a role to play in that regard. All of these groups must work with the resources available to keep budgets balanced.

24/7 Wall St.: The best- and worst-run states in America

Many of the best-run cities either have at least one industry that is supporting the labor force, or are close enough to major urban centers, such as Dallas, Phoenix and San Francisco, to benefit from jobs available there.

The economies of the worst-run cities fall into two categories. Some were badly damaged by the housing price collapse. These include Riverside and Stockton in California and Las Vegas, Nevada. Others have had much more long-term economic troubles. These include Detroit, St. Louis and Cleveland, whose once-booming manufacturing-based economies have been decimated by jobs going overseas.

Fiscal management is another factor that had a strong impact on where cities ended up on our list. The majority of the best-run cities had their general obligation debt rated Aaa by Moody?s. None of the worst-run cities received that perfect score; some, such as Detroit and Stockton, were rated below investment grade. Stockton is notable for actually defaulting on its debt in June of last year.

These are the best and worst-run cities in America:

Best -run cities

1. Plano, Texas

????????? Population:?271,380

????????? Credit rating:?Aaa, no outlook

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?1.62 (2nd lowest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?6.9 percent (13th lowest)

Plano, based in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is the best-run city in America. Among households in the city, 14 percent earned over $200,000 in 2011, the fourth-highest proportion of all cities. Meanwhile, a mere 1.9 percent of households earned under $10,000, which was the second-lowest of all cities. The city?s 1.62 violent crimes per 1,000 people is the second-lowest of all large cities. Plano is home to many corporate headquarters, including J.C. Penney and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. These companies are among the 10 largest employers in the city. The city appears to be largely unaffected by the housing crisis. The median home price rose by more than 5 percent between 2007 and 2011, while the national median price fell by more than 10 percent.

2. Madison, Wis.

????????? Population:?236,889

????????? Credit rating: Aaa, stable

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?3.48 (15th lowest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?4.9 percent (2nd lowest)

Madison is home to the state capitol, as well as the University of Wisconsin?s flagship campus. In addition, the region is a base to employers in fields such as technology and health?care. The unemployment rate of 4.9 percent in 2011 was the second-lowest among all large cities in the U.S. Of the city's adult population, 54 percent have a bachelor's degree, the third-highest rate among the top 100 largest cities. In December, the Madison City Council adopted a rule banning the government from using emergency reserves to fund the operating budget unless two-thirds of members vote otherwise. With the city exercising this kind of caution, it is no surprise Moody?s analytics rates madison general obligation debt as a perfect Aaa, with a stable long-term outlook.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 most-hated companies in America

3. Irvine, Calif.

????????? Population:?215,511

????????? Credit rating:?Not rated

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?0.56 (the lowest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?6.5 percent (tied- 11th lowest)

With almost 97 percent of residents aged 25 and over with at least a high school diploma, and with nearly 63 percent with at least a bachelor's degree, Irvine has the most educated population of all of the 100 most populous cities. The city?s high educational attainment has translated to a highly compensated population -- a whopping 18.8 percent of households earned more than $200,000 in the last year. Irvine has the lowest violent crime rate of all the 100 largest cities, with just 0.56 violent crimes per 1,000 people in 2011. Irvine?s government has received a lot of flack recently for its efforts to transform the Orange County Great Park, with critics arguing that more than $200 million worth of spending has gone to waste. The newly elected City Council has pledged more oversight on spending and has terminated contracts with two firms working on the project.

4. Lincoln, Neb.

????????? Population:?262,350

????????? Credit rating:?Aaa, stable outlook

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?3.71 (18th lowest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?3.9 percent (the lowest)

Lincoln?s 3.9 percent unemployment rate in 2011 was the lowest of all metropolitan areas in the country. The city is home to the University of Nebraska?s flagship campus, which employs more than 8,000. Like Omaha, Lincoln has been spared from the recession more than most places. Home values rose 2.7 percent between 2007 and 2011 compared to a 10.7 percent drop nationwide. In 2011, just 0.36 percent of Lincoln?s homes were in foreclosure, the eighth-lowest rate among large cities. Like many of the other top-rated cities, Lincoln?s general obligation debt is rated as a perfect Aaa, with a stable outlook.

5. Fremont, Calif.?

????????? Population:?216,912

????????? Credit rating:?Not rated

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?1.77 (6th lowest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?7.5 percent (tied- 23rd lowest)

Fremont was incorporated in 1956, joining five towns together as a single city. The city is near the core of Silicon Valley, while also connected to San Francisco by the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. It has one of the most educated and high-earning populations in America, with over 51 percent of residents age 25 and older holding a college degree in 2011. That year, median household income was $92,665, the highest of any large city in the U.S. The city has an exceptionally strong manufacturing base, with almost 22 percent of working adults employed in the sector. Among the companies with manufacturing operations in Fremont are tech manufacturers Western Digital and Seagate Technologies, as well as electric car builder Tesla Motors.

Worst-run cities

1. San Bernardino, Calif.

????????? Population:?213,008

????????? Credit rating:?not rated

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?8.76 (27th highest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?17.6 percent (3rd highest)

Few cities were hurt by the housing crisis to the same extent as San Bernardino, where the median home value declined by 57.6 percent between 2007 and 2011, more than any other large city in the U.S. By the end of 2011, almost 4.4 percent of homes in San Bernardino were in foreclosure, among the highest rates for all large cities. That year, the unemployment rate reached 17.6 percent, or nearly double the U.S. rate and almost 10 percentage points higher than city?s annual rate in 2007. In August, declining home values and rising employee retirement costs forced the city to file for bankruptcy. But the city?s filing is being challenged by its largest creditor, the California Public Employees' Retirement System, which is demanding payments.

2. Miami, Fla.

????????? Population:?408,760

????????? Credit rating:?A2, negative outlook

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?11.98 (12th highest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?12.4 percent (17th highest)

Between 2007 and 2011, the median home value in Miami fell by 43.5 percent. Additionally, the city had one of the nation?s lowest median household incomes, at under $29,000, while 31 percent of residents lived below the poverty line -- nearly twice the U.S. rate of 15.9 percent. Despite the difficult economic conditions Miamians faced, the city joined with Miami-Dade County to pay for almost 80 percent of the more-than $600 million cost of building a new baseball stadium for the Miami Marlins. The deal has caused significant uproar. While taxpayers pay extremely high costs to service the stadium debt, the team has traded many of its top players. In 2011, the SEC launched an investigation into the agreement.

24/7 Wall St.: Nine beers Americans no longer drink

3. Stockton, Calif.

????????? Population:?296,367

????????? Credit rating:?Caa3, negative outlook

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?14.08 (8th highest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?20.2 percent (the highest)

Last year, Stockton was unable to fund its pension liabilities and make debt-service payments. As a result, it became the largest city in U.S. history to file for bankruptcy. The city had been especially hurt by the recession. Its unemployment rate for 2011 was above 20 percent, while more than 5 percent of homes were in foreclosure -- both among the highest rates for any large city. Just before the bankruptcy filing, Moody?s downgraded the city?s credit rating to account for the likelihood of a default. Moody?s noted, ?The Caa3 rating level assumes losses to bondholders will be greater than 20 percent. The negative outlook reflects the high likelihood that losses could exceed our estimates.? Not only have the city?s creditors been affected, but so have city employees and retirees. According to NPR, the city may cut health benefits to reduce its $417 million in unfunded liabilities.

4. Detroit, Mich.

????????? Population:?706,640

????????? Credit rating:?Caa1, negative outlook

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?21.37 (the highest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?19.9 percent (2nd highest)

Detroit was hit hard during the recession, with the near-collapse of the automobile industry and a further slowdown of the already embattled housing market. The median home value between 2007 and 2011 tumbled by 43.5 percent, or more than four times the rate of decline across the country. The lack of income coming into the city?s coffers in the last few years has led to significant financial difficulty for Detroit. Moody?s currently rates city?s bonds as Caa1, which is considered junk status and the worst-rating Moody?s gave to any major city. Mayor Dave Bing signed a budget that aims to cut $250 million in the 2012-2013 fiscal year, with total spending of $1.12 billion.

5. Hialeah, Fla.?

????????? Population:?229,967

????????? Credit rating:?not rated

????????? Violent crime per 1,000 people:?3.78 (18th lowest)

????????? Unemployment rate:?14.1 percent (tied- 9th highest)

Home prices between 2007 and 2011 fell by 44 percent in Hialeah, the 10th-highest decline of all 100 largest cities. The median household income of $27,208 in 2011 was the third-lowest of all major cities, after declining by 44 percent during the recession. Of workers residing in Hialeah, 15.5 percent worked in the generally low-paying retail trade, the highest percentage of all of the 100 largest cities. As a result of industry composition, nearly 40 percent of city residents are without health insurance, higher than any other large city in the U.S.

Brands Running Ads On Vine - Business Insider

Urban Outfitters was the first big brand to run an ad on Vine, as far as we can tell from searching Twitter and media coverage of the launch of Twitter's ingenious new 6-second video app.

Vine was unveiled by Twitter on Jan. 24. By 6.07 p.m., UO had tweeted this Vine video of a couple of dogs, along with the sarcastic comment, "The most important Vine you'll ever see."

Ironically, if it indeed turns out to be the case that UO was the very first advertiser to promote itself through Vine, then it will actually have been a very important Vine.

Lack of recreational supervision causes serious gymnastics injury ...

Case Overview

This case involves a 13-year old female who sustained a serious injury while practicing gymnastics. The plaintiff was participating in gymnastics, and while she used the AAI single bar to perform a front giant rotation, the equipment (bar) suddenly collapsed and dropped approximately 10 inches. The plaintiff sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident. Prior to the plaintiff?s accident, the children were allowed to setup the equipment, but the equipment was not checked or prepared by adult supervisors or coaches on the day of this incident.

Question for Expert Witness

Do gymnastics facilities require a coach or supervising adult to ensure that the students have properly arranged the equipment?

Answer from Expert Witness

I have worked in the gymnastics industry for over 30 years as a coach and a judge. I am very familiar with the procedures that must be adhered to in order to ensure that all equipment is properly setup and checked. I have coached students at all levels, from pre-school to elite competitors. I am also an internationally certified judge and hold a safety certification from USA Gymnastics.

Answer from Expert Witness #2

It certainly sounds like protocol was not followed here. As an adjunct professor and former professor and administrator at a university, I have been involved with recreation and sports for the past thirty years. I have been involved in many gymnastic safety symposiums and my teaching and research duties focused on safety and risk management. Also, I am certified as a recreation administrator, with recreational experience at all levels.

Answer from Expert Witness #3

It certainly seems like the instructors were at fault here. Under no circumstances should students ever assemble any of the equipment. In any event, the instructors must make sure that the equipment is set up properly before anyone uses it. I am highly experienced with recreational and athletic activities having worked in this field my entire career. With respect to gymnastics, I have investigated and testified in numerous identifiable gymnastic apparatus cases over 30 years. I have also investigated other sports and recreation equipment assembly and supervision injuries.

nitusharma: Expand Company Growth with Free Online Advertising ...

There are several advantages of online marketing as more and more companies often need internet advertising to get into certain consumer areas. Advertising should be specific so as to reach the intended public which is why online advertising is growing very fast. With today?s technology, more and more people are getting online either searching for information or looking for entertainment. If you don?t advertised online you are more likely to be ignored or you will miss potential customers. If you are keen in making your business grow within the shortest time possible, you should advertise online as it is one of the fastest forms of advertisement reaching diverse audiences almost at the same time. Free ads online sites are many.

One of the most dramatic advantages of online advertising is that you are in a position to make flexible templates. It is easier for you to know the amount of traffic that your target consumers have generated and measure the strength of your online advertising. Through an online advertising, you can create a link whereby you will have the feedback from your clients so it will help you to adjust where necessary in your advert for example you can change the phrases in your document or that you can promote one product over another. There are some techniques which you must put into consideration in order to succeed in an online advertising. The most crucial online advertising technique is to make sure that you maximize your site for search engines. The first technique to employ in your online business is to use awards and competitions. These awards are meant for giving ratings but not prizes. These awards are cheaper but the actual benefit is that rating ensures that you your online business will be noticed.

The use of Ezine newsletters in your online advertising is another technique that should be employed in any online advertising. Free online advertising require that you go through all the publications of Ezine magazines for any information that might be found in them. In online marketing, Ezine is the image of your online business. These Ezine?s should be given out for free and make sure to include some advertisements with a lot of contents. This Ezine is a tool so you should not try to make money out of it. People will have to be reminded about your products by this tool and it will portray you as an expert in the field. Premium is another technique in an internet marketing campaign. Premiums will include tea mugs, ties, key holders etc with the company?s logo printed in them and it should be given out for free. In internet marketing an online marketing may use all these but in addition you should think of screen savers, backgrounds, mouse etc. As long as all these things are for free people will use them and they will be reminded of your business every time they use them. Once you have your premium ready to roll it is not necessary for you to advertise in your site alone since there are several other sites on the net that list free stuff so you have to make sure that you submit yours to as many sites of that kind as possible.

The use of speeches in your internet marketing is one of the greatest techniques which most people cannot afford It is not for everyone but it is a way of showing that you are among the best in your field. What you speak before your local chamber of commerce should be of great value. Speeches are among the leading offline online marketing techniques. Free online advertising involves giving out free articles which will reach bigger audiences over the internet. There should be no much trouble to publish your articles so you don?t have to just pitch your business but while pitching, be sure to add high value contents so that your readers will appreciate and enjoy reading right until the end. Your articles should be unique so fresh content is what will be highly valued. Offer bonuses in all your products you sell. Bonuses are often marketing technique that is highly used in the internet. An example of a bonus that you may give out is to tell your customers to buy a product and they will get some free lessons that concern the use of that product.? This marketing technique is unavoidable since most consumers will want to know how to use the product that they have just bought. The bonus is supposed to be a product of high quality something that is able to fetch money on its own. By doing this you are creating customer trust on your products therefore making them to like you and hence associate the product with that warm feeling that?s common when you find a great bargain.

In internet marketing there should also be free samples just like in real life situation. If you display a good sample many people will turn their attention into that product hence you make quick sale. You don?t have to spice up your free sample because you are marketing a product. The purpose of this free sample is to show the customer what they will get for their money. By so doing you are building trust with your customers. Offer your customers special offers since they have trusted you. They should be the first to know of a new product that you want to introduce into the market. Treat them in a special way unlike any other. You should be sending them something for free in a regular basis, something which others have to buy. Again you should offer free services so those people who would want to use your product but do not know about it yet. Offering free services is what internet marketing is all about. Free stuff is what will increase traffic in your site so you will have an opportunity to sell your products. Remember to always email your customers within 24 hours. Free online ads will be a major source of advertising

Blood-based biomarkers may lead to earlier diagnosis of Parkinson's disease

Jan. 20, 2013 ? Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological condition. At present, it is usually diagnosed only when motor features are present. Hence, there is a need to develop objective and measurable biomarkers to improve PD diagnostics during its earlier stage, prior to its motor onset. In this pilot study, researchers identified and tested the first blood-based circulating microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers for PD.

Their results are published in the latest issue of Journal of Parkinson's Disease.

PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the United States, affecting approximately one million Americans and five million people worldwide. Its prevalence is projected to double by 2030. The most obvious symptoms are movement-related, such as involuntary shaking and muscle stiffness; later, cognitive and behavioral problems may develop along with additional peripheral symptoms such as gastrointestinal dysfunction. There is currently no cure, although the drug levodopa can relieve the symptoms. The differential diagnosis of PD is based primarily on subjective clinical rating scales associated with motor functions. As these scales can only be used when motor features are present, 60-70% of a patient's dopaminergic neurons are already lost by the time of diagnosis.

"The ideal biomarker should be minimally-invasive, cost efficient, quantifiable, reproducible, specific, and sensitive," explains lead investigator Sok Kean Khoo, PhD, of the Center for Neurodegenerative Science and Genomic Microarray Core Facility at the Van Andel Institute, Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Biofluids such as plasma could provide an ideal resource for development of such desirable biomarkers. However, clinical diagnostic tests based on biochemical analysis of biofluids from PD patients have yet to be established," she continues.

Investigators hypothesized that specific miRNAs related to PD can be detected in plasma. It is known that miRNAs detected in various cells and tissues can also be found in biofluids such as blood plasma and serum. A preliminary study using miRNA microarrays showed that approximately 4% (35/866) of miRNAs from healthy brain tissues could also be detected in the plasma of healthy controls.

In an initial study they obtained the global miRNA expressions in plasma of an initial discovery set of 32 PD patients and 32 normal controls and identified nine pairs of PD-predictive classifiers and 13 most-differentially expressed miRNAs as potential biomarkers to discriminate PD patients from normal controls. They then used a quantitative real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction technique (qRT-PCR) to validate and evaluate the performance of these biomarkers in a new replication set of 42 PD patients and 30 controls from the same clinical site.

They then identified a combination of biomarkers that achieved the highest predictive performance and applied this panel of biomarkers to a new, independent validation set of samples from 30 PD patients from a different clinical site, which showed lower biomarker performance.

The investigators acknowledge that there are still challenges to be overcome in validating biomarker candidates due to clinical and sample variability and factors that influence miRNA expression such as comorbidities and other medication the patient is taking. However, explains Dr Khoo, "This is a proof-of-concept study to demonstrate the feasibility of using plasma-based circulating miRNAs, and the hypothesis that miRNA expression changes are associated with the neurodegenerative disease process, either directly or as part of positive feedback loops, is emerging rapidly. This study opens new opportunities to the exploration of circulating miRNAs for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic interventions for PD and possibly other neurodegenerative diseases."

"A diagnostic test to determine the status of a patient's disease onset would provide crucial data for more timely, efficient, and successful therapeutic interventions," said Patrik Brundin, MD, PhD, Director of Van Andel Institute's Center for Neurodegenerative Science. "There is an urgent need to develop objective, measureable biomarkers to improve PD diagnostics and help define its subtypes, and Dr. Khoo's interesting study is an important step in that direction."

(AP) ? An Algerian security official says de-mining squads searching for explosives found "numerous" bodies Sunday at a gas refinery where Islamic militants took dozens of foreign workers hostage.

The official said the bodies were difficult to identify and it was impossible to determine if they were foreign hostages or others. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Algerian special forces stormed the natural gas complex in the Sahara desert on Saturday to end the standoff, and the government said all 32 militants were killed. Earlier Sunday, Algeria's chief government spokesman said he feared the toll of hostages ? which stood at 23 on Saturday ? would rise as the special forces teams finished their search.

Rotten To the Core ~ RiseEarth

Your child has been sentenced from 12-16 years to a re-education camp. No, we are not talking about a FEMA camp, but we may as well be.

Our Education system is rotten to the core, the Common Core, that is. Common Core is the latest of the educational fad programs which is supposedly designed to raise American school children?s academic performance. This program is insidious and bad for students and America at its core. This is a multi-part series which will examine the origins of this Common Core program, the stated goals behind the program, the real hidden agenda behind Common Core and most importantly, the threat that this program poses to our children and to the United States as whole.

One Fad After Another

Most any veteran teacher in the public school system will tell you that about every six to seven years, the American educational system embarks on the latest ?miracle? designed to fix the low standardized test scores American students achieve in comparison to our international counterparts. Teachers have endured such educational faux pas from Goals 2000, to School to Work, to No Child Left Behind and now we are witnessing the latest in fad in American education, Common Core Standards.

Each one of the aforementioned program threw billions of taxpayer dollars down the toilet, while contributing to the dramatic decrease in student performance. For example, SAT Reading scores, for the high school class of 2012, reached a 40+ year low since the implementation of No Child Left Behind.

Everyone on these previous educational reform programs emanated
from the United Nations organization, UNESCO. Everyone of these programs is a propaganda tool designed to dumb down our children and these programs are being remarkably effective to this end.

The Hidden Agenda Behind Common Core

The undeniable truth is that each of these United Nations inspired and failed educational programs have ulterior designs on what should be taught to our children. The undeniable fact is that the brainwashing of our children is the ultimate goal of Common Core.

Common Core is based upon social justice, arriving at knowledge and subsequent decision making through a spirit of collectivism and developing a communal agreement about the need to teach and to integrate into each classroom an underlying theme of sustainable development. These goals are not just going to be taught in specific Environmental Science courses, but these philosophies are to be implemented and taught in EACH and EVERY course that a child takes during their educational experiences beginning with pre-K and stretching to post graduate secondary education.

Agenda 21 Controls Your Child?s Mind

For the more aware of the readers, you surely recognize the terms, sustainable development, social justice and collectivism as staples of the philosophy which underlies Agenda 21.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos Globalist and Eugenics proponent, Bill Gates, is one of the Founding Fathers of the Common Core movement and its copyright holders, NGA/CCSSO. Gates donated about $25 million dollars to promote his version of global education. Gates has made several donations to CCSSO to promote Common Core. In 2009, Gates made two separate donations of $9,961,842 and $3,185,750.cIn 2010, Gates donated $743,331 and in 2011, he contributed $9,388,911 . In 2008, Gates donated $2,259,780 to the National Governor?s Association (NGA) to develop and implement Common Core. The NGA is the conduit into America from the United Nations UNESCO, Education for All Agenda 21 version of globalist education being forced down the throats of our young people.

Gates is listed as partner with UNESCO/UN to fund ?Education For All,? which in turn was transferred to the NGA which changed the name to Common Core. In a key document, The Dakar Framework for Action: Education For All: Meeting Our Collective Commitments? which identifies the goals for what became Common Core. The document speaks directly to the Agenda 21 educational ideals of collectivism, social justice, environmental justice and the espousing of the beliefs of the pseudoscience known as sustainable development.

Chapter 36

Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 Public Awareness and Training focuses on impressing upon every citizen on the planet, the indispensable need for achieving sustainable development. In plain language, Common Core is going into every country. The implementation names of this global education may vary, but the underlying Agenda 21 philosophies do not. Chapter 36 also states that the globalists plan to ?reorient? worldwide education toward sustainable development. In future installments in this series, the weak academic standards of Common Core will be revealed. Reform of the nation?s standardized objectives is merely a smoke screen to the true intent of the program which is to for acceptance for Agenda 21 policies. Subsequently, the Agenda 21/UNESCO documents clearly state their intention to turn each student into a globalist who will accept smaller living space, residing in the stack and pack cities of the future, acceptance of drastic energy reduction and the loss of Constitutional liberties.

The document goes on to say that ?While basic education provides the underpinning for any environmental and development education, the latter needs to be incorporated as an essential part of learning. Both formal and non-formal education are indispensable to changing people?s attitudes so that they have the capacity to assess and address their sustainable development concerns. It is also critical for achieving environmental and ethical awareness, values and attitudes, skills and behaviour consistent with sustainable developmentand for effective public participation in decision-making. To be effective, environment and development education should deal with the dynamics of both the physical/biological and socio-economic environment and human (which may include spiritual) development, should be integrated in all disciplines, and should employ formal and non-formal methods.?

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos Please take note of reference to spiritual education. The implication is subtle, but undeniable. This phrase opens the door to the evisceration of the Christian religion. This phrase allows Common Core to propagandize school children into belittling the importance of Jesus Christ. And what will Christianity be replaced with? Anyone who has read the Agenda 21 documents in earnest, understands that the replacement for Christianity has been groomed for decades, and that replacement is the pagan religion called GAIA.

GAIA changes the Christian worldview significantly. Christians fundamentally believe that God gave dominion over the earth to man with the remainder of the hierarchy consisting of animal, fish, plants and finally, the earth. GAIA teachers that the earth reigns supreme followed by animal, fish, plants, and man in last place. This is a decidedly anti-human agenda. The undeniable conclusion is that your children will receive cleverly crafted lessons designed to lessen the appreciation for their own worth as a human being. This is the beginning of spiritual enslavement paradigm which will accompany the already implemented policies of economic enslavement presently being thrust upon the American people through the acquisition of massive debt created by the globalists.

When Common Core is fully implemented in 2015 and your child begins being assessed on the PARCC and Smarter Balanced assessments, your child will be an Agenda 21 globalist minion in training. This is not a warning about what will be, the enemy is inside the gates propagandizing your child.

Education Without Representation

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos The Common Core is an untested, federally promoted, unfunded experiment. The standards creators (NGA/CCSSO) have not set up a monitoring plan to test this national experiment, to see what, if any, unintended consequences the Common Core will have on our children. This is a game Russian Roulette being played on the socio-emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of our children?s development.

No teacher and no school board member was asked to contribute to the Common Core standards. Nor was any State Legislature involved in the creation of this monstrosity.

Under this plan, every teacher will teach the same material with the same teaching strategies as every other teacher. This is the 21st Century educational version of the Stepford Wives. The Tenth Amendment is dead and individual freedom is being stamped out.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, the more serious threats to our children?s educational futures, under this misguided plan, will be laid out and documented in the future parts of this series

Microquasar makes a giant manatee nebula

Jan. 19, 2013 ? A new view of a 20,000-year old supernova remnant demonstrates the upgraded imaging power of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and provides more clues to the history of this giant cloud that resembles a beloved endangered species, the Florida Manatee.

W50 is one of the largest supernova remnants ever viewed by the VLA. At nearly 700 light years across, it covers two degrees on the sky -- that's the span of four full Moons.

Turbulent History

The enormous W50 cloud formed when a giant star, 18,000 light years away in the constellation of Aquila, exploded as a supernova around twenty thousand years ago, sending its outer gases flying outward in an expanding bubble.

The remaining, gravitationally-crushed relic of that giant star, most likely a black hole, feeds on gas from a very close, companion star. The cannibalized gas collects in a disk around the black hole. The disk and black hole's network of powerful magnetic field lines acts like an enormous railroad system to snag charged particles out of the disk and channel them outward in powerful jets traveling at nearly the speed of light. This system of a black hole and its feeder star shines brightly in both radio waves and X-rays and is known collectively as the SS433 microquasar.

Over time, the micro quasar's jets have forced their way through the expanding gases of the W50 bubble, eventually punching bulges outward on either side. The jets also wobble, like an unstable spinning top, and blaze vivid corkscrew patterns across the inflating bulges.

New Namesake

Optically bright astronomical objects, those visible to the eye and optical telescopes, often are nicknamed for their earthly likenesses, such as the Whirlpool Galaxy and Owl Nebula. Invisible W50 comes by its less catchy name by being the 50th radio source listed in the Westerhout Catalog, assembled in 1958 by Dutch astronomer, Gart Westerhout

When the VLA's giant W50 image reached the NRAO Director's office, Heidi Winter, the Director's Executive Assistant, saw the likeness to a manatee, the endangered marine mammals known as "sea cows" that congregate in warm waters in the southeastern United States.

Florida Manatees are gentle giants that average around 10 feet long, weigh over 1000 pounds, and spend up to eight hours a day grazing on sea plants. They occupy the remainder of their day resting, often on their backs with their flippers crossed over their large bellies, in a pose closely resembling W50.

Dangerous encounters with boat propellers injure many of these curious herbivores, giving them deep, curved scars similar in appearance to the arcs made by the powerful jets on the large W50 remnant.

Thanks to Ms. Winter's suggestion, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory has adopted a new nickname for W50: The Manatee Nebula. In collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the NRAO will unveil the Manatee Nebula to the public during the annual Manatee Festival in Crystal River, Florida on a stage overlooking the largest natural concentration of wintering manatees in the world.

?Hand sanitizer is your friend?: A trip to the Adult Entertainment Expo

An adult film actress poses for photographs on day one of the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas (Holly Bailey/Yahoo??

LAS VEGAS?The Adult Entertainment Expo, the nation's premier porn convention, at first might seem like any other business gathering, with free tote bags branded with the logo of a corporate sponsor and a thick program of seminars. But that impression doesn't last long.

On Wednesday afternoon, more than 50 people packed into a conference room at the Hard Rock Hotel just off the Strip. Some of the men wore suits that looked as though they had just been pulled off the rack at a Men?s Warehouse, while the women teetered around in tall high heels that seemed more like stilts than shoes. All were taking meticulous notes?some on their iPads?about how to generate media coverage for their business.

Live chat 12:30 p.m. ET: The Adult Entertainment Expo and the changing porn industry

?A lot of the outlets I deal with are not really interested in helping you promote your products,? Jay Kopita, a longtime publicist, explained to his audience. ?So unless there?s some sort of interesting angle, it?s gotta be something really newsworthy, something really relevant.?

Kopita paused for moment. ?Obviously, promoting a mother and daughter going tag team is kind of an easy sell,? Kopita added matter-of-factly, referencing two of his clients who had recently appeared on Anderson Cooper?s syndicated talk show to discuss their joint adult film venture.

A titter of laughter moved through the room.

It was day one of the Expo, an annual event sponsored by Adult Video News, the porn industry?s most important publication. Every year, an estimated 30,000 people descend on Sin City for the confab?the industry types to hobnob with each other and test out the latest sex toys, and fans hoping to meet their favorite adult film star.

The runaway success of the "50 Shades of Grey" trilogy has also made adult entertainment more mainstream.

On Wednesday, the convention kicked off with a brief seminar dubbed the ?Home Room? to allow organizers to give first-time attendees tips about how to navigate the four-day affair. Some in the audience already looked rough for the wear?collapsing at conference room tables with plastic cups of Bloody Marys that looked and smelled more like a glass of vodka with a splash of tomato juice.

There had been some convention prepartying the night before, a woman who gave her name as ?Mistress Lisa,? told me, as she sipped her drink and tried to look alive. ?I?ll be fine in an hour,? she said in a hoarse voice.

At the front, an AVN editor, Sherri L. Shaulis, was dispensing advice on how to make it through the conference alive.

?Hand sanitizer IS YOUR FRIEND,? she declared, emphasizing her words into the microphone. ?There is a CVS across the street. ? Buy hand sanitizer by the gallons. Seriously.?

Shaulis also urged people to drink as much water as possible?even as she acknowledged there was a stocked bar literally every few feet at the convention. ?We are trying to get you guys liquored up,? she admitted. ?But control yourself. ? You don?t want to be that person who got so drunk they got kicked out of a porn convention, OK??

In the hallways, it would have been easy to mistake the event for something a local chamber of commerce might have sponsored. There were people trolling the hotel corridors with rolling briefcases full of paperwork and legal-size notepads already scribbled up with notes. People were crowded into groups, shaking hands and exchanging business cards.

But just when it would seem that this event was as boring as any other business convention, it simply took a glimpse at someone?s name badge to remind that this was different. Few people, except for reporters, appeared to be using real names.

There were many women named ?Candy? and several who claimed the surname ?Mistress,? including the aforementioned ?Mistress Lisa? and a ?Mistress Veronica.? One man had a badge that simply read ?Dude.?

?Nobody uses their real name,? a man, whose attendee badge read, ?One Bitchin Guy,? told me. ?Everybody has a stage name, even if you aren?t talent.?

Not everybody seemed to be on scene purely for business. During the afternoon, dozens of porn stars crowded into the large expo hall to pose for photos and sign autographs for industry types and some who clutched cameras and claimed to be members of the press.

Actress Jesse Jane, an industry veteran who had her breasts redone so that they would look better on high definition television, stood for three hours gamely posing for photos and signing autographs. Standing just over 5 feet tall, Jane had packed her tiny frame into a skin tight pink minidress and greeted every person she met with the excited disposition of a high school cheerleader.

?HELLO! How are you?!? she chirped. ?I?m awesome!?

Jane posed for photo after photo?clutching even the creepiest of the creepy close and tight. Even though she was tiny, the men she hugged often looked as though they might faint.

?I loooooove coming here,? Jane said, admitting she didn?t really know how many times she had attended the confab. ?I do this for my fans. These are the people that keep us going. They are amazing! Without them, we are nothing.?

It seemed the women were willing to do anything to satisfy the fans?except for actually getting naked, which is legally prohibited under convention guidelines though the rules have been skirted at past adult expos.

In the convention hall, women in tiny bikinis and six-inch heels paraded around, heeding requests from amateur photographers asking them to contort their bodies in a litany of provocative positions. At one point, a woman wearing a tiny bikini that was decorated to look like leaves nearly toppled over in her sky high red heels as she tried to look as sexy as possible for a pack of photographers.

But it wasn?t just women. James Deen, one of the industry?s most popular male stars, was holding court nearby in his own booth?though he seemed to be attracting more reporters than actual fans.

Deen, who is famous in the industry for being well-endowed and sells a line of dildos modeled after his own penis, recently jumped the line between porn and mainstream films by starring in ?The Canyons? with Lindsay Lohan?a tumultuous filming process that was recently documented in the New York Times Magazine. On Wednesday, Deen was so besieged by reporters that he had a handler whose sole job appeared to be keeping those who had not requested interviews in advance away from the star.

In seminars, industry veterans passed on their pearls of wisdom about how to best utilize the week?delivering speeches that seemed straight of out of the movie ?Boogie Nights.? At one point, Brian Gross, a longtime adult entertainment publicist, asked members of the audience to raise their hands if they were new to the industry. More than half the room did.

?The biggest lesson for all of you is this is a small, family oriented industry. We all know each other. It is really important you get in with people that you trust, people who have experience, people that have the background,? Gross told the room. ?It is unlike any other industry in the world, based on the fact that you are getting into something, that for better or worse, is taboo. You might be questioning, ?What am I doing?? ? To get into this industry and be successful, you have to be confident in who you are and what your product is. It is important that you have relationships with the right people.?

Near the back of the room, a woman quickly grabbed her pen and legal pad and made a note of what Gross had said.

    ?CONFIDENCE!!? she wrote.

Algeria government says had to storm plant, action continues

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria's government spokesman confirmed some hostages were killed in a continuing military operation at a desert gas plant on Thursday but said troops had been forced to act to free them due to the "diehard" attitude of their captors.

In the first official comments by the government on the day's events, Communication Minister Mohamed Said was quoted as telling state news agency APS that many militants had been killed and that efforts to free foreign hostages were going on.

He acknowledged there had been "several deaths and injuries" among the hostages, but insisted Algeria, which fought a bloody war against Islamists through the 1990s, would not negotiate.

"We say that in the face of terrorism, yesterday as today as tomorrow, there will be no negotiation, no blackmail, no respite in the struggle against terrorism," APS quoted Said as saying.

Adding that Algerian forces had done all they could to ensure the hostages' survival and bring the siege to a successful conclusion, he blamed "the diehard attitude of the terrorists" for forcing the military to launch its operation.

Western leaders whose citizens are among the hostages, including British Prime Minister David Cameron, said they were told of the assault only after it started. He told Britons to prepare for "bad news" and an aide said Cameron would have preferred to have been consulted before the raid began.

Said said the militants' goals had been to destabilize Algeria and draw it in to the civil war in Mali.

The guerrillas had demanded that France stop its offensive against Mali's Islamist rebels and that Algerian withdraw its cooperation with the French operation.

Former ORU, TU coach Bill Self in Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame class

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, who launched his head coaching career at Oral Roberts and Tulsa, is among seven individuals in the 2013 induction class for the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2013 class, announced Tuesday, also includes University of Oklahoma wrestling great Wayne Baughman, Oklahoma City Thunder chairman Clay Bennett, Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci, former Oklahoma City University and NFL player LeRoy ?Ace? Gutowsky, former OU quarterback Jimmy Harris and Oklahoma State two-sports All-American John Henry Ward.

The induction ceremony will be held Aug. 5 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Gutowsky, Harris and Ward are being inducted posthumously.

?This year?s class is spectacular,? said Eddie Griffin, president of The Jim Thorpe Association. ?The achievements of these individuals are unparalleled: Olympic champions, All-Americans and record-setting careers. It?s just remarkable. This group truly represents how great the state of Oklahoma is.?

Regarding Self?s selection, he said he was notified by Griffin last fall. Self?s response was along the lines of ?are you sure??

?Why me?? Self said. ?One of those deals.?

But Self said he is honored and humbled.

?I?m really proud of my state and respect all the people in different sports and different areas that have contributed to the rich sports history of Oklahoma,? said Self, who was born in Okmulgee and grew up in Morris, Stillwater, Claremore and Edmond.

Self was the state?s high school basketball player of the year in 1981 and he was a four-year letterman at Oklahoma State, helping the Cowboys reach the NCAA Tournament in 1983.

?I know I?m getting inducted for coaching because if anybody saw me play, there?s no way I could be inducted as a player,? Self said.

Self was an assistant at OSU before becoming head coach at Oral Roberts prior to the 1993-94 season. He re-energized the program during four years at the helm. In his first season, the Golden Eagles lost 21 games. In his final season, the Golden Eagles won 21 games and reached the NIT.

Self moved across town and became the head coach at the University of Tulsa. In 2000, he guided the Golden Hurricane to a school-record 32-win season that ended one victory shy of a Final Four appearance. He has since coached at Illinois and Kansas, guiding the Jayhawks to a national championship in 2008 and a national runner-up finish last season.

Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Wayne Baughman: Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Wayne was a standout wrestler at the University of Oklahoma. He was an NCAA Division I wrestling champion and placed second twice, becoming a three-time All-American. He was also a two-time Big Eight champion. In addition to his collegiate career, Baughman was on three U.S. Olympic and eight World Championship wrestling teams. He coached two Olympic and five World Championship teams.
