?Step-Parenting? is nothing new to couples marrying today. You may find yourself marrying a person who has children from a prior relationship or marriage, or a single parent who adopted a child on their own. Or maybe you are the one bringing children into the relationship. In either case you or your spouse is taking on the role of step-parent!
Unfortunately ?the step-parent? has gotten a bad reputation from the motion picture industry. They have been portrayed as mean, cruel, and heartless characters that do not love the step-children and treat them horribly, such is the mind set of many children.
The children may also feel that you are trying to take the place of their natural parent and therefore resent you, or maybe they think your stealing away the affection of their parent.
These are just a few of the hurdles you may face when starting a step-parent family.
You can however be successful with your new step-children, but you may find it is going to take plenty of patience and understanding. There will be situations that you may not be prepared for! Don?t be afraid to say I don?t know what to do? Talk to your spouse, they love you and their children. They want everything to work out just as much as you do! You can also talk with your friends and family members that have been step-parents. Present to them one of the situations that you recently encountered with your step-children and how you handled it. Get their opinion on what they might have done differently. Think about an event that you feel you handled well and examine what you did at that time. Compile a list of positive out comes and when it didn?t go so well. And be honest with yourself was it an issue left unsettled and you were just relieved it ended, or did you really resolve the conflict between you and the children. If you think you need more professional help, then seek family counseling. There are many books written on the subject of ?step-parenting?. They might just help and things will go a lot smoother than you think.
On a personal note; I too have been a step-parent and I have been raised in a family of his, mine, and ours and came away from it with some wonderful memories and very, very close relationships!
I truly believe that there can be great success for the step-parent family.
